An electronic click wrench comprises a handle for applying torque through a shaft to a working head. The shaft includes torque sensing means for calculating the torque applied to a workpiece by the working head, and a trigger mechanism for sending a haptic feedback to a user by triggering a small movement of the handle relative to the working head when a set point torque is reached. The trigger mechanism comprises a permanent magnet that is normally anchored by magnetic attraction to a pole piece so as to resist separation when a force is applied through the handle, and an electromagnetic means actuable to reduce or cancel that magnetic attraction so as to permit separation of the pole piece and permanent magnet, thus generating the haptic feedback. Operation of the electromagnet may oppose the flux of the permanent magnet through the pole piece. Alternatively operation of the electromagnet may divert the flux of the permanent magnet away from the pole piece.

A torque applying tool such as a nutrunner or torque wrench incorporates torque sensors responsive to strain in a shaft (30) mounting an output square drive head (2) the strain being measured as it exists immediately adjacent the drive head (2). The shaft (30) is a hollow quill shaft an outer diameter of which is splined (6) to receive a torque drive input at a location axially spaced from the drive head (2). A central shaft (31) extends from the drive head (2) centrally up the quill shaft (30) and a flexible cantilever beam (34) is mounted between a cranked end (37) of the central shaft (31) as it extends out of the quill shaft (2) and the corresponding end of the quill shaft (2). One or more strain sensing transducers (38), preferably S.A.W. devices, are mounted on the cantilever beam (34) to detect flexure of the beam (34), and the resulting output signal is passed through an inductive or capacitive coupling (39,40) for transmission to a CPU (27) and display (28).

The insulator block further has generally semi-cylindrical indentations at each of its ends. The first element may be a shaft (1) that is fixed during testing and the second element is a nut (4) rotatably mounted on the shaft, whereby the element rotated by the tool has a minimal moment of inertia. Whichever of the first and second elements (1, 4) is held stationary during the test may be mounted in a hub (18) that is locked during the test but can be rotated at the end of the test to reset the test joint. Measurements may be made of the torque and the rotation angle to derive an actual torque rate of the joint, which allows correction of errors by moving the pivot point (10).
