Methods for creating a protective seal (24) suitable for protecting polymer-based electronic devices, including light emitting diodes and polymer emissive displays, are disclosed together with the protected devices. The protective seal (24) includes one or more thin films of silicon nitride or other inorganic dielectric applied at a low temperature. One or more nonreactive metal layers may be present in the protective layer as well. Other embodiments are disclosed which include a protective cover over the protective layers. These protective layers provide encapsulation with sufficient protection from the atmosphere to enable shelf life and stress life polymer electronic devices that are adequate for commercial application.

More particularly, this invention relates to polymer LEDs which offer high brightness, high efficiency, and extended operating life, and which comprise: a transparent hole-injecting anode layer (11); an emissive layer comprising an electroluminescent polymer (12); and an electron-injecting cathode layer (13); the cathode layer comprises an ultra-thin layer of alkaline earth metal, such as calcium, strontium, and barium, having a thickness of about 100 Angstroms or less, typically from about 15 to about 100 Angstroms.

Long-lived organic light-emitting diodes are achieved by positioning a layer (15) comprising polyaniline in the emeraldine salt form directly contiguous with the anode side of the active light-emitting layer (14). Particular advantages are achieved if the emeraldine salt-containing layer (15) has a sheet resistance of at least about 1000 ohms per square which can be achieved by casting the layer (15) from solution in a polar solvent, most particularly, DMSO.
