A harvester (10) which uses a rotary style cutter bed (30) has a series of rotary cutters (32a-32j) extending across the path of travel of the machine and rotatable about individual upright axis. Part of the cutter bed (30) is a flat gear case (34) containing a train of intermeshed spur gears (35) that serve to distribute power between the cutters above the gear train. Each end of the gear case (34) has a hollow, gearless extension welded thereto which supports at least one additional outboard cutter that receives its driving power exteriorally of the gear case (34). One embodiment uses a mechanical drive to bring power to the upright shaft of the cutter having the first spur gear so that the cutters with gears receive all their power from the driven cutter. The outboard cutters not having gears are driven by exterior, over-the-top drive mechanism coupled with the shafts of the first and last geared cutters, such drive mechanism alternatively taking the form of timing belts (120).

The connection points for the steering linkage (38) between the tongue (30) and the gearbox (116) are such that a telescoping section (106) of the driveline (90) bridging the tongue (30) and the input shaft (114) of the gearbox (116) has equal angles maintained at its universal joints (104, 110) at opposite ends of the telescoping section (106) to reduce unequal loading at those locations. The dog clutch for a square baler is normally retained in a disengaged position as a continuously driven sprocket rotates around it during baling operations. When a retainer for the dog is released, the dog is released by the retainer and flips out to an engaged position so as to be driven through one knotter revolution by a driving lug on the rotating sprocket, whereupon it is reset by the retainer into its disengaged position. An external lobe on the rotating sprocket blocks releasing movement of the retainer if the driving lug of the sprocket is in the immediate vicinity of the dog, which could otherwise cause an insecure engagement of the lug with the dog. The dog-engaging seat on the retainer is spring-loaded to provide yieldable relief in the event binding starts to occur between the retainer and the dog.

A baler for making rectangular crop bales has a generally horizontally disposed fore-and-aft extending baling chamber (12). The pickup (20) of the baler is disposed underneath the baling chamber in line with the path of travel of a reciprocating plunger in the overhead chamber. An in-line transfer duct (22) leads generally upwardly and rearwardly from the pickup (20) to the bottom of the chamber (12). An enclosed crop flow passage is defined from a point immediately behind the pickup to a point located at the opening in the bottom of the baling chamber and presents a forwardmost cutting zone (30), a packing zone (32) behind the cutting zone (30), and an accumulating zone (34) behind the packing zone (32). Cutter apparatus (36) within the cutting zone (30) reduces the crop materials into smaller pieces as they flow through the cutting zone (30), whereupon a separate packer (38) takes the materials from the rear side of the cutter apparatus (36) and packs them in a downstream direction toward the accumulating zone (34) where they form into a charge. A stuffer (40) operating through successive stuffing cycles then engages the accumulated and densified charge and sweeps it up into the baling chamber (12) in timed relationship with the reciprocating plunger (42).
