A coolant flow enhancing device is provided to increase electric machine coil cooling at coil end turn locations. Such a device is incorporated into an overall fluid cooled electric machine that has phase separators extending through slots between stator teeth. The device includes flow deflectors located at ends of the phase separators. Each of the flow deflectors is designed so that a contour of its interior surface follows an outer contour of a corresponding one of the end turns to both maximize a cooling fluid flow rate past the one of the end turns and minimize separation of the fluid from the one of the end turns.

A rotor arrangement with decreased fluid flow impedance and improved rotary motor cooling is mountable on a shaft for rotation relative to the stator of a rotary motor arrangement. The rotor arrangement has a plurality of laminations joined together to form a multilayer laminated rotor with a plurality of magnet receptacles. Each of the laminations has a solid central section surrounding an opening within which the shaft is receivable, spokes extending substantially radially outwardly from said solid central section, ribs interposed between adjacent spokes, and bridges interconnecting the spokes and ribs. At least some of the bridges are inset from an outer diameter of the lamination toward the solid central section to decrease fluid flow impedance and improve rotary motor cooling.

A hybrid stepper motor includes a stator having a number of poles. Teeth are formed on the stator poles and separated from each other by slots. A magnet is inserted in the slots to a predetermined depth from a top surface of the stator teeth. The motor further includes a rotor that is provided coaxial with the stator. Teeth are also formed on the rotor opposite the stator teeth. The rotor teeth enable the rotor to be rotated relative to the stator in cooperation with the stator teeth.

The invention resides in permanent magnet rotors and methods for assembling the same. In one embodiment, one or more arcuate magnetic element(s) (2) is (are) disposed around a cylindrical rotor core (1). In turn, a hollow retaining shell (3) is slip-fit around the magnetic element or elements (2). Spring biasing members (8, 11) prevent relative movement between the core (1), the magnetic element(s) (2) and the retaining shell (3). Annular end plates (4a, 4b) are secured to the ends of the core (1) to seal off the interior of the device. In another embodiment, relative movement between the core (1), the magnetic element(s) (2) and the retaining shell (3) is prevented by applying adhesive between those parts.

A motor controller that incorporates all of the advantages of RS-485, yet allows the user to interface with the controller through RS-232 without a separate RS-232 to RS-485 converter. The controller includes a port 106 for receiving RS-232 compatible signals. The RS-232 signals are converted to RS-485 compatible signals which are, in turn, converted into logic level signals suitable for the motor controller. The RS-485 signals may be shared among a number of controllers, and an RS-485 port 104 is provided for such a purpose. RS-485 ports can be interconnected via a common bus so that a number of motors can be separately controlled from a master controller (usually a personal computer) connected to any available RS-232 port.
