Described is a pharmaceutical preparation for use in peritoneal dialysis, in particular continuous ambulant peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Also described is the use of a starch ester to prepare such a pharmaceutical preparation. Particularly suitable starch esters are acetyl starch with a mean molecular weight of 100,000 to 200,000 Daltons and a molar substitution ratio of 0.3 to 0.5. The preparations proposed make it possible to carry out peritoneal dialysis without damaging the peritoneal epithelium. Furthermore, the preparation is not stored in the organs of the body.

In order to prepare physiologically tolerated water-soluble starch esters, the invention proposes that starch is converted by acid hydrolysis or enzymatic hydrolysis to a partially hydrolysed form with a mean molecular weight in the range from 10,000 to 500,000 Daltons. This partial hydrolysate is then acylated, in aqueous solution, with the anhydride or halide of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid with 2 to 4 carbon atoms or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with 3 to 6 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof, and an alkalinization agent, to give a product with a substitution ratio in the range from 0.1 to 1.0 mole/mole. Salts are removed from the resulting reaction mixture. The starch esters thus obtained are highly suited for clinical use, in particular parenteral administration and administration in the diet.

Described is a method of preparing a fructane which is readily soluble in water and a physiologically compatible kidney-examination agent containing such a fructane. The method calls for an aqueous fructane extract obtained from plant matter to be ultra-filtered through a first membrane which retains high-molecular-weight carbohydrates and proteins but allows the fructane to pass through. The filtrate thus obtained is then subjected to a second ultra-filtration operation using a membrane which retains the fructane but allows salts and other low-molecular compounds such as mono- and oligosaccharides to pass through. The fructane obtained in this way is used, together with physiologically compatible buffer compounds, as a kidney-examination agent at an osmolality equal to that of blood and at a pH of 5.0 to 7.0.

Pour la production d'esters d'amidon solubles dans l'eau, physiologiquement compatibles, de l'amidon est transformé, par hydrolyse acide ou hydrolyse enzymatique, en un hydrolysat partiel de poids moléculaire moyen (Mw) compris entre 10000 et 500000 dalton, après quoi cet hydrolysat partiel est acylé jusqu'à une substitution molaire comprise entre 0,1 et 1,0 mol/mol, en solution aqueuse, avec l'anhydride ou l'halogénure d'un acide monocarboxylique aliphatique ayant 2 à 4 atomes de carbone ou d'un acide dicarboxylique aliphatique ayant 3 à 6 atoms de carbone, ou des mélanges de ceux-ci, et avec un agent d'alcalinisation. Les sels sont éliminés du mélange de réaction ainsi obtenu. Les esters d'amidon ainsi obtenus conviennent très bien pour des applications cliniques, notamment parentérales et diététiques.
