The system includes a first proxy server (208) for receiving a first proxiable protocol message from a first network element (202). The first proxy server performs a first database lookup based on information contained in the first message. If the first proxy server does not obtain the requested information, the first proxy server formulates a second proxiable protocol message and forwards the message to a second proxy server (210). A second proxy server receives the second message and performs a second database lookup based on information contained in the second message. The second proxy server sends the results from the second database lookup to the first proxy server and the first proxy server forwards the results to the first network element.

A method of connecting a calling party connect to the PSTN to a called party connected to an IP network. When a calling party wishes to initiate a voice over IP call to a called party, the calling party need only connect to the IP network through an IP gateway and dial the PSTN telephone number of the called party to complete an IP connection to the called party. An IP gateway or other database is used to perform the necessary translations of addressing and routing information between the PSTN and the IP network for the call to reach its intended destination. In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the same PSTN directory number assigned to a party for PSTN calls is also used as a designator for that party's IP address. As such, the PSTN dial plan is reused in association with calls placed over an IP network to that party.

A packet data network call has both a call signaling path 230 and a bearer path 220. The call signaling path 230 handles call control data necessary to setup, connect and process a call. The bearer path 220 is the actual voice data connection over which a conversation may take place. For many services the call signaling path 230 must be able to tap into the bearer path 220 in order to detect specific events. However, the bearer path 220 may only be accessed at specific points by specific nodes. In some cases MGC 210B has no control over the call other than as a signaling bridge between MGC 210A and MGC 210C. The present invention provides the intermediate MGC 210B with H.248 control reach through capability to a media gateway in the bearer path 220. One implementation is H.248 based in which messaging is modified so that a call control message requests an H.248 link to a specific gateway. Another implementation is ISUP based in which H.248 capabilities are added to ISUP based call control messages.

A method of and apparatus for transmitting SS7 signals between a single node (such as, for example, Service Control Points (SCPs), Service Switching Points (SSPs) (16A, 16B, 17) and Signalling Transfer Points (STPs) (14)) and a plurality of other nodes is disclosed. The method involves connecting a node to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) network (22) through a High Speed Link (HSL) (24). A virtual channel for each of the other nodes connected to the ATM network is provisioned on the HSL. Each channel is identified by a Virtual Path Identifier (VPI) and Virtual Channel Identifier (VCI) pair. SS7 signalling data from the single node will be encapsulated with the VCI+VPI pair in an ATM cell and transmitted on the HSL to the ATM network where the ATM cell is transmitted to another node over a Permanent Virtual Circuit (PVC) (26a-d) or Switch Virtual Channel (SVC). The other node may also be connected to the ATM network through a similar HSL with multiple virtual channels.

The present invention relates to a graphical user interface (GUI) for displaying historical and current performance information for a route in communications network, the route having several paths between two end points. Performance data from the network is collected and processed to generate route and path performance data. The processed data is stored in a database. The GUI is embodied in a network management device which draws upon information stored in the database. In a preferred embodiment, the GUI displays a route panel showing the structure of the route, a timebar showing the time period for which information is displayed, a paths' panel showing information about each path in a tabular format, a selected paths' panel showing information about selected paths in a tabular format, and a performance panel showing performance data in a graph.
