    摘要: A steer-drive interposes respective left and right orbital gear drives (20, 22) into the vehicle drivetrain between the engine/transmission (10, 12) and the respective propulsion axles associated with each side of the vehicle. The orbital drive units comprise only an input gear (54) and an output gear (58) interconnected by at least one orbiting cluster gear (60, 61) that is supported in a rotating housing and also meshes only with the input and output gears. The orbital units are designed so that (a) when rotation of the housing (64) is prevented, driving torque is transferred at speed ratios selected to be as close to 1:1 as is practical, and (b) when steering torque causes rotation of the housing, the steering torque is added simultaneously in equal and opposite directions to the orbital units, causing the drive on one side of the vehicle to slow down at the same rate. The steer-drive is appropriate for the drivetrains of tracked vehicles, boats and airplanes.

    摘要: Smaller and lighter hydraulic pump/motors provide remarkably improved volumetric efficiency with pistons having body portions substantially as long as the axial length of the respective cylinders in which they reciprocate. A plurality of respective lubricating channels, formed circumferentially and radially transecting the walls of each cylinder, are each positioned to be almost completely closed at all times by the axial cylindrical body of each respective piston during its entire stroke. Each lubricating channel is interconnected, one to another, to form a single, continuous lubricating passageway entirely within the cylinder block and not connected by either fluid 'input' or fluid 'output' passageways, being replenished solely by a minimal flow of fluid entering from the valve end of each cylinder and passing between each respective cylindrical wall of each cylinder and the axial cylindrical body of each respective piston. Several embodiments are disclosed in combination with various spring-biased hold-down assemblies.

    摘要: In the basic embodiment, the transmission includes (a) a minimal-orbiter gear complex having only a control gear and an output gear interconnected by the gearing portions of at least one cluster gear supported by an orbiting web responsive to an input drive provided by a primary engine and (b) a single, infinitely-variable rotary control device providing resistance torque to counter engine torque to slow and stop the control gear of the orbital complex. The rotary control device, which may be a hydraulic jack or an electrically braked magnetic wheel, provides no propelling motion but rather only provides a resistive torque. In a preferred embodiment for automotive use, the engine torque is split at all times between two mechanical paths. One path drives the web of a minimal orbiter gear set, and the other drives the sun gear of a single, standard planetary gear set.

    摘要: The differential steering drive includes a drive differential interconnecting the drive shafts for the tracks and a steering differential for superimposing additive and subtractive rotations to the tracks for steering and pivot turning. In the preferred embodiment for high speed tracked vehicles, the drive differential is an all-gear no-clutch type limited-slip differential, and the steering differential is an unlimited-slip differential. The differentials are arranged to provide no-slip track operation traveling in straight paths or turning if at least one track has traction. In another embodiment for pivot-turning slow-moving off-road vehicles, both the drive and the steering differential are all-gear no-clutch type limited-slip differentials. Further, both embodiments preferably include additional left- and right-side all-gear no-clutch type limited-slip differentials for dividing the torque delivered to a respective pair of drive axles associated with each track.

    摘要: The size, weight, and cost of a full-traction differential are significantly reduced by the synergism of several interrelated design features of a cartridge-like gear complex: (1) Each combination gear has only a shallow journal hole in each end of an otherwise solid gear body, being supported on mating hubs fixed to mounting plates slipped into a one-piece differential housing. (2) The solid worm-wheel portion of the combination gears has a deeper hour-glass shape. (3) Mating worm/worm-wheel teeth have a broad 'supra-enveloping' contact pattern on only the drive side of the mesh. (4) The side-gear worms have closed-end teeth. (5) Both diameter and axial length of the side-gear worms are reduced by a special cutting process. The efficiency of the differential is increased by a thrust plate supported in the mounting plates and positioned between inner ends of the side-gear worms.

    摘要: A modular track suspension system is readily adapted for attachment to any presently manufactured full-size automotive vehicle (10) built with a load-carrying frame (12), being easily substituted for the vehicle's conventional wheeled undercarriage either during or following final assembly. The module uses a pair of endless rubber tracks (14, 15), one track under each respective side of the vehicle; and each track (14, 15) is supported over tandem units (17, 18) with, preferably, side-by-side dual-wheels (20, 21 and 22, 23) having rubber tires. The dual-wheels are each movable in a vertical plane, and each dual-wheel can move separately and independently of the similar independent movement of the other dual-wheel with which it is in tandem. Each dual-wheel is also resiliently biased in the direction of the terrain on which the vehicle is standing or moving.

    摘要: An axial piston device may be operated as a pump and includes a self-centering rotary valve. The device includes a stationary housing encompassing a shaft and the rotary valve. The rotary valve and the shaft are coupled to each other. Upon rotation, the rotary valve self-centers as a result of elimination of moments and forces within the pump. The inventive pump is a piston device. The valve is within a valve bore, which is a part of a manifold. A shaft is within the manifold and the shaft is attached at its distal end to a planar surface of the rotary valve. The shaft has a first axis of rotation and the rotary valve has a second axis of rotation. During operation of the pump, the first axis is often times offset from the second axis. The pump operates via a swashplate with reciprocating pistons while the housing remains stationary.
