A packaging machine (1) is adapted to form a web (8) of packaging material into a tube to surround items (3) to be packed, the tube then being sealed and severed between successive items to produce individual packages (5). The tube is formed by sealing one surface of an edge zone of the web to the same surface of the opposite edge zone of the web so that, in the finished package, the sealed zones form a flap extending longitudinally of the package. The machine comprises a machine bed (2) and successive pairs of rollers (18,20,22) located in the machine bed forming successive nips for driving the partly formed packages (25,38) towards a sealing and severing station (23) and for forming the required seal between the edge zones of the web, wherein the edge of at least one of at least one of the pairs of rollers (18;20), located adjacent the partly formed packages, is relieved whereby an air passage is formed within the tube at the point where the tube passes the relevant pair of rollers as it moves towards the sealing and severing station (23). The machine additionally comprises means (32,34) for applying a vacuum to the tube adjacent the point where the edge zones of the web are brought together to form the tube.

A multispindle lathe is disclosed which has an indexable drum (20) including a plurality of main spindles (26). A secondary spindle (30) opposes the main spindles (26) so that it is coaxial with one of the main spindles (26) at an indexed position. The secondary spindle (30) is rotatable on a fixed axis (32) and can be moved axially towards the main spindle (26). The rotation of the secondary spindle (30) can be synchronized with the rotation of the main spindle (26) so that both spindles (26,30) can hold a workpiece (55). A cut off tool (50) moves transversely to the spindles (26,30) to cut the workpiece (55) from bar stock which has been fed into the main spindle (26). After cut off, the secondary spindle (30) moves away from the main spindle (26) and a secondary tool (44) moves transversely to the secondary spindle (30) to machine the end of the workpiece (55) which has just been cut off. Movement of the secondary tool (44) and secondary spindle (30) can be coordinated to form curves and tapered threads.

Un orifice de soupape axial (46) est formé dans la couronne (45) du piston (41), de façon à établir une communication entre la chambre de compression (49) et la chambre de combustion (48). Une tige (51) montée dans le cylindre comporte sur son extrémité interne une tête de soupape (55) destinée à fermer l'orifice de soupape (46). Lorsque le piston (41) s'approche de sa position au point mort inférieure, la tige (51) sort de la couronne (45) du piston (41) pour ouvrir l'orifice de soupape (46) et laisser entrer une charge de la chambre de compression (49) dans la chambre de combustion (48).
