A lightweight, high-strength composite fabric (110) suitable for use in a carpet backing, roofing and membranes and other products which employ rugged fabrics. The composite fabric (110) comprises a layer of nonwoven material (116) disposed between a layer of low shrinkage warp strands (112) and a layer of low shrinkage weft strands (114). The layers are stitched or knitted together and the resultant fabric (110) may be coated with a resin or sizing agent (122) to prevent slippage between the several layers of the fabric (110) and impart a measure of stiffness to the fabric (110). The fabric may be manufactured in sheet or, more preferably, roll form and may be coated with materials suitable for desired end applications, e.g., bituminous material whereby the fabric (110) may function as a ready-to-use roofing membrane or other high-strength fabric product.

A system and method for identifying and separating handwritten text from machine printed text in a document having a combination of handwritten text and machine printed text. In one embodiment, the present invention is installed as an intelligent printing control interface in a conventional computer and allows any document generated by any application to be selectively processed to remove any handwritten text prior to printing of the document, under the control of the user. In an alternative embodiment, the present invention is installed as an intelligent printing control interface in a conventional digital copy machine, which allows any document being copied to be selectively processed to remove any handwritten text prior to printing of the document, under the control of the user. The present invention employs a handwriting separation method which uses Hidden Markov Models to identify regions as either handwritten text or machine printed text.

A self-scanning light-emitting device is provided in which the amounts of light of light-emitting elements may be corrected to make the distribution of amounts of light in a luminescent chip or among luminescent chips uniform. The correction for amounts of light of light-emitting elements may be carried out by regulating the time duration of on-state of a light-emitting element or the voltage of a write signal applied to a light-emitting element. According to the present invention, the distribution of amounts of light becomes uniform, so that the printing quality of a printer using such self-scanning light-emitting device is improved.

A device is provided for storing signals in minimal format, which includes a controller for processing signals and a non-volatile storage medium. The device provides output signals in one of a plurality of digital formats. The output signals may be video signals, encrypted data, etc. In one embodiment, the device provides video signals in one of two digital video Standards, DV and MPEG-2, each Standard providing for discrete cosine transform (DCT) compressed signals which include macroblocks containing a plurality of DCT blocks. When raw video signals are received by the device, the DCT blocks are quantized according to one of the two quantization methods defined by the respective Standard, i.e., either DV or MPEG-2 and stored on the non-volatile storage medium in a minimal storage format consisting of DCT coefficients. Further, when signals are received in DV or MPEG-2 formats by the device for storage, such signals are decoded to obtain DCT coefficients and stored on storage medium in this minimal storage format. Upon a request for output of such stored signals, the controller selectively encodes the data in minimal storage format to either DV or MPEG-2 formats and outputs the encoded data to the requestor.
