Conduit liners (100) and methods for their construction and use are provided. The liners include a first flexible layer (10) mechanically bonded to at least one glass-containing layer (20) and folded to form a tubular laminate. The laminate can be penetrable by resinous liquid capable of setting the form of substantially continuous matrix within the laminate following the expansion of the laminate within a conduit. In preferred versions of the liner, multiple glass layers are provided on the inner and outer diameter of the construction with a polyester core so as to meet minimum thickness requirements for vibration resistance under American in situ pipe vibration resistance codes.

An open grid fabric (400) for reinforcing wall systems and a method of making same. First (410) and second (420) sets of substantially parallel, selected rovings are combined using certain knits, leno weaves, or adhesive methods. The rovings are direct-sized with at least a silane sizing and preferably have a linear density between 100 and 2000 grams per thousand meters and are arranged at an average of 3 to 10 ends per inch. A polymeric coating is applied to the fabric at a level of 10 to 150 parts dry weight of resin (440) to 100 parts by weight of the fabric while assuring that the open grid remains open (445). A method for reinforcing a wall system and a wall segment product utilizing the novel open grid fabric of the present invention are also disclosed.

A reinforced, impervious, unitary film and a method for making the same are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a film is produced from a layer of weft inserted warp knit polyester scrim and at least one layer of polyester mat, together being impregnated with a suitable thermoformable plastic in liquid form such as PVC plastisol, then being set and calendered under pressure to deform the plastic and create a continuous, non-porous, unitary film. The resulting product is highly resistant to water absorption and hydrostatic pressure and essentially non-wicking.

A method of making a multiple biased structural fabric (40) is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, double biased structural fabric (40) is produced using the novel method. A single fabric layer (11) made up of structural yarns (12) held together by secondary yarns (14) may be biased in a biasing step and is then fed through a folding machine (20). The single biased fabric folded onto itself in the folding machine (20) presents two layers of single biased fabric in the form of a double biased fabric (25). This fabric is then fed to an affixing stage (22; 28). The affixing stage (22; 28) knits or sews the two layers of fabric together to produce the double biased fabric (40) of the instant invention.

A lightweight, high-strength composite fabric (110) suitable for use in a carpet backing, roofing and membranes and other products which employ rugged fabrics. The composite fabric (110) comprises a layer of nonwoven material (116) disposed between a layer of low shrinkage warp strands (112) and a layer of low shrinkage weft strands (114). The layers are stitched or knitted together and the resultant fabric (110) may be coated with a resin or sizing agent (122) to prevent slippage between the several layers of the fabric (110) and impart a measure of stiffness to the fabric (110). The fabric may be manufactured in sheet or, more preferably, roll form and may be coated with materials suitable for desired end applications, e.g., bituminous material whereby the fabric (110) may function as a ready-to-use roofing membrane or other high-strength fabric product.

A preformed, unitary composite for reinforcing while suppressing curl in bituminous roofing membranes includes as a first layer, an open, non-woven grid of low shrinkage, continuous filament polyester yarns that are at low tension and adhesively secured together, and as a second layer, a lightweight, preformed fiberglass mat, the second layer being adhesively secured to one side of the first layer. The adhesive secures the two layers together such that at least some of the individual yarns of the first layer are at least partially coated and impregnated by the adhesive without forming a film that closes all openings through the composite. The adhesive that secures the continuous filament yarns of the first layer together and that secures the first and second layers together is a vulcanizable rubber binder, such as cross-linked styrene butadiene rubber, which includes about 50 to about 80% styrene. The composite is flexible, capable of being impregnated by bituminous material, and sufficiently strong to be useful in reinforcing such membranes. The composite, when used in reinforcing such membranes, suppresses curl in the membrane during and after forming the membrane. Also disclosed is a process for making such a composite.
