摘要:
The invention pertains to a hopper loader apparatus for separating and forming an overlapping shingled stream of individual signatures of sheet materials from a vertically aligned, parallelepiped shaped stack of such signatures (18) for subsequent handling operations. The hopper-loader has a chassis (12); a first continuous, downwardly inclined planar conveyor (16) mounted on the chassis (12) which moves a stack of vertically aligned signatures and deposits them onto a second conveyor (20) as a separated, shingled stream of the signatures. The second conveyor (20) is mounted on the chassis (12) and aligned with an end of the first conveyor (16). It has a plurality of driven belts which travel over each of an upwardly inclined planar ramp segment (24), an arched transition segment (26), and a planar exit segment (28). The arched transition segment (26) comprises either a belt slide or a plurality of serially arranged rollers (30).

An apparatus for continuously varying the position of an article carrying platform in response to an inflowing stream of articles placed on the platform. The platform positioning apparatus finds use as part of a vertical stacking machine which stacks an inflowing stream of signatures on the platform. It has a position sensor for detecting the position of the platform and providing a platform position signal to a controller. A controller issues a translation signal to translation means responsive to the platform position signal. Translation means causes the bidirectional translation of the platform responsive to the translation signal from the controller.

The invention provides apparatus for transferring sheet material in signature form including a horizontal frame and a conveyor mounted longitudinally in the frame at an upper portion of a rearward section thereof and which extends a part of the distance along the length of the frame. The conveyor has a plurality of horizontally disposed conveyor belts which are spaced apart to form gaps therebetween and which receive the sheet material in the form of a stack of signatures on top of the belts. The apparatus further has one or more stationary rails mounted in the frame extending about parallel to the conveyor belts. The rails extend from the rearward section of the frame to a forward section of the frame. The apparatus includes a bundle transfer vehicle having a first rolling element portion comprising a framework and a plurality of friction reducing means mounted on the framework. The friction reducing means engages and rides horizontally on the rails. The vehicle has a second portion connected by raising and lowering means to the first portion comprising a plurality of connected, upright support segments. The raising and lowering means mounted on the first portion are capable of raising and lowering the support segments relative to the first portion and its friction reducing means. The support segments are interdigitated and substantially aligned with the gaps between the conveyor belts. The segments are at a first position below the conveyor belts when the support segments are lowered by the raising and lowering means and at a second position above the conveyor belts when the support segments are raised by the raising and lowering means. At the second position the support segments are capable of lifting and holding the stacked sheet material in signature form away from the conveyor. Means are provided for biasing the bundle transfer vehicle for movement in at least one direction along the rails.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus for cleaning printing press components with carbon dioxide snow or pellets. Upon impact, the snow or pellets dislodge debris adhering to the components and sublime to a non-hazardous gas. A typical component cleaned by the present invention would be a rotating blanket cylinder (60) of an offset printing press. The snow or pellets are typically conveyed by an air stream under pressure to a moving nozzle (254), a series of fixed nozzles (54), or some other dispensing device.

An improved stacker apparatus for the formation of aligned stacks of signatures from one or more incoming streams of partially overlapping signatures in shingled form. The stacker has an outer framework (32) having an input end (16) and an output end (26). A stream of partially overlapping signatures in shingled form is accepted at the input end and is passed to a compression conveyor. The compression conveyor has two conveyor belts in compressed opposition to one other which follow an upward arcuate path along a series of idler rollers (22). The series of idler rollers (22) is mounted to the outer framework (32) by a quick release inner framework (44). The conveyor transfers the signatures to a receiving station which guides successive signatures into aligned stacking registry with one another. When a conveyor belt breaks, the inner frame (44) is quick released from the outer frame, a new belt is wound around the inner frame, and the inner frame re-mounted. Drive shaft pulley assemblies are rotably mounting to the outer framework (32) by a quickly releasable bearing such as a two bolt (55) flanged bearing with a screw clamp collar. This arrangement avoids removing each roller to replace a broken belt.

A rotating brush cleaning system (20) is provided for removing debris, lint and ink from components (28) of printing devices. Operation is effected by an air cylinder (38) which periodically urges a rotating spiral brush cleaner (20) against the component (28) of the printing device and retracts the cleaner (20) from the component (28) of the printing device. The action of the cleaner (20) in combination with rotation of the component (28) of the printing device is such as to loosen dust and lint from the component (28), which dust and lint is then drawn into a vacuum system (40-41-56-58) that surrounds the cleaner (20).

A machine for arranging signatures (11) in bundles includes a receiving conveyor (12) onto which signatures are placed. The receiving conveyor (12) moves the signatures (11) in a shingled condition between deflecting surfaces (56) to cause the signatures to assume an edge-standing condition. The edge-standing signatures (11) move onto a consolidating conveyor (18) so they move closer together. The signatures (11) pass from the discharge end of the consolidating conveyor (18) onto an accumulating conveyor (19), which normally advances the signatures at a slightly lower speed than the consolidating conveyor (18). When enough signatures (11) to make a bundle have passed onto the accumulating conveyor (19), the velocity along that conveyor is increased substantially, and the consolidating conveyor (18) is stopped to produce an isolated group of edge-standing signatures on the accumulating conveyor (19). A sword (90) is extended into the signatures (11) at the juncture of the consolidating (18) and accumulating (19) conveyors and pushes the signatures on the accumulating conveyor (19) forward to form a distinct gap in the signatures to the rear of the sword (90). Compression fingers (106) extend into the path behind the isolated signatures on the accumulating conveyor (19) and push them forward. The sword (90) moves rearwardly to engage the leading signature behind the gap and prevent the signatures from falling. The compression finger (106) push the isolated bundle through a board drop assembly, where boards are placed at each end of the bundle. Thereafter, the compression fingers (106) compress the bundle so that a band may be secured around it.

A vacuum blanket cleaning system is provided for removing dust, lint or ink from a blanket cylinder in an offset printing press during the uninterrupted course of a press run. Operation is effected by an air cylinder (38) which periodically urges a brush (24) against the blanket cylinder (28) and retracts the brush from the blanket cylinder for replacement or maintenance. The action of the brush in combination with rotation of the blanket cylinder is such as to loosen dust and lint from the blanket cylinder, which dust and lint is then drawn into a vacuum system (56, 58) that surrounds the brushes.
