A diverting tool (10) having a deflecting surface (10a) equipped with an anchor that secures the tool (10) at a desired subsurface location within the casing of a primary well bore to divert drilling equipment used to drill a lateral bore (28). An annular cup-type seal (17) on the tool seals with the casing. A passage (18) through the tool permits fluid bypass across the seal as the tool is lowered through the casing. The passage is closed from the well surface when the tool is anchored. After the lateral bore is drilled, the tool is used to divert a liner (31) into the lateral bore. The upper end of the liner extends into the casing where it is centralized. The liner (31) is cemented in the lateral bore (28) and in the casing with the cement placed to effect sealing of the intersection of the liner and casing. A tubular mill (40) removes the cement and liner from the casing above the diverter tool leaving a flush opening from the casing into the liner. The mill then telescopes over the deflecting surface, mills the swab-cup seal (17) to disrupt the tool's seal with the casing, locks onto the tool and releases the tool from the casing for retrieval of the combined assembly to the well surface. The tool may be repositioned within the casing to divert tools into the liner.

A system is provided for measuring both the temperature and pressure of fluid in a borehole utilizing a single small diameter tube extending from the surface to the desired downhole test location in a borehole. Downhole fluid pressure is transmitted through the small diameter tube, while a sheathed thermocouple or fibre optic line extending along the flow path of the tube is used for transmitting downhole fluid temperature information to the surface. A continuous surface read-out of both pressure and temperature is thus possible, and the temperature read-out may be used to both monitor downhole fluid temperature and increase the accuracy of the fluid pressure measurement system.

A downhole centralizer is provided for positioning along a drill pipe string passing through a deviated well bore. A centralizer body (14) is connected to an upper sub (12) by a plurality of lobe-shaped connectors (32,38) which permit angular deviation of the central axis of the upper sub with respect to the central axis of the centralizer body. The centralizer body is preferably connected to a lower sub (16) by similar lobe-shaped connectors (46,44). The opposite ends of each of the upper and lower subs are threaded for fixed enagement with respective upper (20) and lower (26) pipe joints in the tubular string. A flexible flow conduit (48) is positioned within a passageway through the centralizer body, and a pair of upper and lower sealing member (50) are provided to maintain sealed engagement between the respective upper and lower subs and the flow conduit for transmission of fluid through the centralizer. The centralizer of the present invention may be reliably used to center the tubing string within the deviated portion of a borehole, thereby reducing torque losses to the drill bit and wear on the drill string.

A single trip tool (10) and method for cutting a window (41) through a well casing (11) and installing an anchoring and orientating sleeve (29) in the casing (11) adjacent the window for subsequent well procedures and equipment installation. A mill (31) held in position within the casing by a hydraulic and weight-set tubular anchor sleeve (29) is used to cut multiple vertical slots in the casing to form a single, large window (41). An indexing mechanism (16) controls circumferential placement of the mill (31). The mill (31) is supported for rotation and longitudinal movement by a carriage mount (39, 40) that advances along dual sloping rails (36, 37) causing the mill (31) to form an increasingly deeper cut during its initial cutting movement. Following formation of the window (41), the mill (31) is retrieved leaving the anchoring sleeve (29) in place for subsequent well procedures. A second embodiment anchors and orients the cutting assembly with an internally contoured coupling (101) that is part of the casing string.
