An apparatus and method for producing a striped coating on a continuous moving strip. The apparatus has a smoothing device including a doctor roll (4) forming a nip with the strip (5). A stationary partition means (8) is provided dividing the nip into nip lengths. Upstream of the smoothing device (4, 5) is a means to deposit coating materials on the strip (5) for delivery into the respective nip lengths at predetermined rates. The deposit means maintain a bead (9) of coating material in each nip length and a stripe of coating material is formed on the strip from coating material escaping the respective nip length as the strip (5) passes through the nip.

Typically, pre-painted steel strip has been produced in a steel finishing mill by applying it as a solvent-free melted liquid to a hot steel strip substrate, known as melt deposition. Melt deposition rate has been effected by controlling the contact pressure between the solid paint and the hot steel strip substrate, while maintaining constant all the other parameters affecting the deposition rate. The difficulty of accurately controlling all of these parameters has in turn made it difficult to obtain a consistently low and constant deposition rate in the production of thin paint coats of uniform thickness. This problem has been overcome by feeding a solid body of paint onto an endless belt conveyor (9), incorporating a substantially planar belt flight (11), a head pulley (12) and turn round means adjacent to the contact point of the paint block (15) and the moving steel strip (5) and consisting of a stationary guide (13) and an idler pulley (14). The turn round means is so constructed that the direction of the belt movement after the turn is at least parallel to that of the continuously moving strip (5) and preferably at an angle away from it. The head pulley (12) is preferably coated with a high friction material such as natural rubber. The planar belt flight (11) is adapted to support a file of at least one and preferably two blocks (15) of solvent-free paint composition, which becomes bonded to the pliable, durable heat-resistant material of the belt. In its simplest form, the flight (11) may slide upon a supporting table with the stationary guide of the turn round being the edge of the table. Alternatively, the paint blocks (15) may be fed vertically downwards between two belt conveyors moving in mutually opposite directions.

An anticorrosion treatment of an aluminium/zinc alloy surface is disclosed. The treatment includes the steps of forming on the alloy surface a coating of a solution which contain 5-40 grams of molybdenum per litre of the solution, 2-29 % by volume of a phosphoric acid, and a surface etchant. The treatment also includes drying the coating to form a dried coating having a loading of molybdenum of at least 10 mg/m of the dried coating and of phosphorus of at least 15 mg/m of the dried coating.

A method of forming a coating of a polymer-based paint composition on a substrate (1) is disclosed. The method is based on the use of pellets (13) rather than solid blocks of the paint composition. The method includes pre-heating a substrate (1) to a temperature that is above the glass transition temperature of the polymer of the paint composition and supplying pellets (13) of the paint composition to the surface of the substrate (1) whereby the pellets (13) progressively melt into a liquid state. Thereafter, the method includes forming a coating of the liquid paint composition on the substrate surface (1) and converting the liquid coating into a solid coating of the paint composition.

In twin roll casting of steel strip, molten steel is introduced into the nip between parallel casting rolls (16) to create casting pool (30) supported on casting surfaces (16A) of the rolls and the rolls are rotated to deliver solidified strip (20) downwardly from the nip. Casting surfaces (16A) are textured by a random pattern of discrete projections having pointed peaks with a surface distribution of between 10 and 100 peaks per mm and an average height of at least 10 microns. The random texture may be produced by grit blasting the casting surfaces on a substrate covered by a protective coating. Alternatively the texture may be produced by chemical deposition or electrodeposition of a coating onto a substrate to form the casting surfaces.

A flow diversion device for use in a gas jet stripping apparatus includes a baffle (26) having a first portion (17) which in use extends longitudinally of the moving strip (4) which is being subjected to the stripping action of the jet stripping nozzles of the gas jet stripping apparatus. The baffle further includes a second portion (19) which diverges away from the moving strip (4) and a gas outlet (27) for providing gas to the strip side of the baffle (26). The baffle is characterised by a gas collection means (20) for redirecting gas from the stripping nozzles to the gas outlet (27). An auxiliary gas supply may be provided to supplement the gas exiting gas outlet (27) to ensure the correct operation of the flow diversion device.

Twin roll casting has been applied with some success to non-ferrous metals, which solidify rapidly on cooling. The same, however, is not true for ferrous metals, as it has not been possible to achieve sufficiently rapid and even cooling of metal over the casting surfaces of the rolls. This problem has been overcome by utilising a metallic surface for the rolls, which has a high affinity for the molten steel of the casting pool and a melting temperature greater than the temperature of the casting surface. The molten steel produces extremely good wetting of the casting surface of the roll, resulting in a wetting angle of the molten steel on the casting surface of less than 40 DEG . Preferably, this wetting angle is less than 20 DEG and the casting surface has an Arithmetic Mean Roughness Value (Ra) of less than 10 microns. These desirable properties on the roll surface are achieved by selecting an at least partially amorphous alloy of two constituents. Preferably, the alloy is a fully amorphous alloy of the nickel-phosphorus systemcontaining about 10 % phosphorus and the balance nickel, which may be applied by eletroless coating. This roll surface prevents the build-up of iron oxide on the casting surfaces of the rolls, which build-up interferes with the uniform conduction of heat away from the molten steel, resulting in simultaneous solidification of the delta and gamma iron phases (0.01-0.18 %C), which causes a surface defect, known as "crocodile-skin". The net effect of utilising this amorphous alloy for the surface of the casting roll is a superior and uniform conduction of heat away from the molten steel, rapid transformation of the steel's microstructure into the wholly austenitic ( gamma ) region, exhibited by fine prior austenite grain boundaries conforming to dendritic grain boundaries and absence of "crocodile-skin" surface defects on the cast strip.
