In each well is a tubular retainer 18 containing a securement member (16) having an annular radially outer marginal portion (14) confined in a circumferential radially inwardly opening groove in the retainer and having resilient radially inwardly projecting teeth (25). The teeth have radially inner edges on a circle of smaller diameter than the rod (15) and are flexible axially to enable the rod to be easily inserted into the securement member but to engage it under convergent bias for holding it against withdrawal from the well. Each retainer (18) can be assembled from commercial plastic pipe fittings or may be formed from injection mouldings.

The disclosure relates to a concrete element (10) having a corner (14) between a side face (12) and an end face (11) in which a box shaped cavity (15) is formed. A pair of U-shaped loops (18) is cast in the segment at the corner with base members (19) of the loops extending parallel to one another across the cavity to receive a fixing bolt (12) which has a head (21) and washer brackets (22) engaging behind the loops and a shank extending from the end of the element to engage in a nut similarly held in a recess of a corresponding segment for securing the segment ends together. The arrangement permits the bolt to be tightened through the cavities at the sides of the segments. The arrangement is particularly suitable for securing arcuate concrete tunnel lining segments together.

The disclosure relates to a method of erecting a tunnel lining using a tunnelling shield (40) comprising the steps of erecting a ring of segments (10) within the shield, each segment having a recess (20) around an outer peripheral edge thereof to provide, in the erected ring, a recess around the outer periphery of the ring of segments at the leading end of the ring in the direction of advance along the tunnel. The shield is then advanced with respect to the erected ring until the trailing end (41) of the shield locates in said recess in the leading end of the ring. The ring of segments is expanded against the tunnel wall by separating adjacent segments (10a) at at least one location around the ring whilst supporting the tunnel wall at that location against collapse by a cover sheet (29) and a supplemental segment (25) is then inserted between said adjacent segments to complete the ring.

The collet has a tapered bore 15 which receives a tapered pin 17 to expand the collet. In order to hold the pin in the collet, the bore is formed with a succession of annular steps 16 along its length and the pin 17 is formed with a similar series of annular steps 18 to inter-engage with the steps 15.
