In the operation of a wheel loader, the linkage arrangement that mounts the bucket to the machine must provide components with adequate loading capabilities while maintaining good visibility to the bucket for an operator. The present linkage arrangement includes a tilt lever (172) with a pair of spaced side walls (178, 180) and a tilt link (176) with a pair of spaced side rails (200, 204). Each spaced side rail (200, 204) of the tilt link (176) has a pair of legs (208, 212, 216, 220), respectively, which straddle one of the pair of spaced side walls (178, 180) of the tilt lever (172) in a connection which improves visibility while processing superior strength capabilities.

A frame assembly (16) includes a central tower portion (24) having a first side wall portion (52) and a second side wall portion (54). The first side wall portion (52) has a first leg (56) and a first arm (60) each extending therefrom, and the second side wall portion (54) has a second leg (58) and a second arm (62) each extending therefrom. The frame assembly (16) also includes a hitch support assembly (26) having an upper plate (84) and a lower plate (86) vertically spaced from each other. The hitch support assembly (26) also includes a connecting member (96) interposed between and connected to the upper plate (84) and the lower plate (86). The hitch support assembly (26) is secured to the central tower portion (24) such that a lower end of both the first leg (56) and the second leg (58) are supported on the lower plate (86). The frame assembly (16) further includes an axle mount assembly (28) having a first axle plate (111), a second axle plate (112), and a support member (108) extending therebetween, wherein both the first arm (60) and the second arm (62) are secured to the support member (108). A method of manufacturing the frame assembly (16) is also disclosed.

The present invention includes a box boom loader mechanism (10) utilizing a box boom lift arm assembly (84) with a single plate steel top wall (96) and a bottom wall (120) connected with a non-transverse weld to a pair of single plate steel inner side walls (88, 92) to define a rectangular cross section therealong. The connection of the top and bottom walls (96, 120) and the inner side walls defines a bifurcated second end portion (176) straddling a central portion (38) of a frame (26) and being connected therewith. A tilt linkage means (318) is connected to the box boom lift arm assembly (84) and includes a tilt lever (322), tilt link (326) and tilt cylinder (410). The connection of the components of the tilt linkage means (318) achieves high visibility and optimal linkage performance. The connection of the bifurcated second end portion (176) to the frame (26) and the non-transverse weld improves strength and fatigue characteristics of the box boom loader mechanism without increasing the weight of the machine.

A steering system (25) for an articulated steered mobile work machine (10) has a first sensor (66) for sensing the relative angular position of first and second machine sections (12, 14) and a second sensor (68) for sensing the relative angular position of second and a third machine sections (14, 16). A controller (70) determines for a sensed relative angle of the first and second machine sections (12, 14) the desired relative steering angle of the second and third sections (14, 16) and actuates a second control valve (42) to direct fluid flow to a second pair of fluid operated jacks (28) and pivot the third machine section (16) to a desired angular position relative to the second machine section (14). The second sensor (68) provides feedback as to the relative angular position of the second and third machine sections (14, 16).
