A slidingly held truncated wedge drawing head having a curved work surface is advanced toward the nip of an intermediate or final pair of laminating rolls, one of which carries the pre-laminated ribbon towards the nip and its position is finely adjusted so that the ribbon material incrementally interfere with at least a terminal portion of said curved work surface and the respective terminal edge of the truncated wedge, drawing the ribbon material and de-aerating it because of the tearing open of trapped air pockets, and causing it to flow and fill an inlet space to the nip between the two laminating rolls, confined by the tip of the truncated wedge. A hydraulic cylinder is used for quickly move the truncated wedge drawing head toward the nip region between the pair of laminating rolls, whilst a position trimming of elevated precision in order to avoid a rubbing contact with the surface of the mantel of the roll carrying the pre-laminated ribbon of the pair, may be alternatively implemented either with mechanical means or with a high precision hydraulic control system.

The invention relates to a method of hot laminating over distinct bond areas barrier and breathable layers (6', 6", 6"') made thermoplastic polymeric materials in order to form a multilayer (6) by way of a calender comprising a pair of counter-rotating cylinders (1, 2) with parallel axes, the mantle surfaces of which define a lamination gap (5) therebetween. On the surfaces of the mantles of both cylinders (1, 2) embossing patterns are formed, each embossing pattern comprising grooves (7, 8) defining therebetween continuous reliefs on the mantles of the two cylinders (1, 2), linearly extending at different or complementary angles of inclination with respect to the axes of the respective cylinders, as observable on an elevation view of the cylinders. During the lamination process the cylinders (1, 2) are heated at a temperature sufficient to soften the polymeric material of the layers pinched at crossovers of said continuous reliefs of the mantles of the two cylinders (1, 2) when the layers pass through said lamination gap (5), whereby bond zones are formed between adjacent layers (6', 6", 6"') at the crossovers of the continuous reliefs of the cylinder mantles.

A process for fabricating by calendering a continuous composite ribbon composed of an openly woven fabric even free of side "selvedge" and/or with weft and warp oriented at any angle from 0° to 45° relative to the advancement direction of the ribbon, over both sides of which respective silicone films are permanently coupled, effectively prevents the insurgence of undulations in the finished composite ribbon because of deformations of the open fabric during the coupling step. This result is achieved by:
pre-joining permanently a first silicone film (6) onto a first side of the fabric (T) by laminating them at a load and temperature sufficiently high to produce the coupling of the fabric to the silicone film, between a coupling cylinder (15) and the discharge cylinder (3) of the first film of silicone of the respective pair of laminating cylinders (3,4); applying the second silicone film (5) produced by the other pair of laminating cylinders (1,2) of the calender onto the other side of the fabric (T), by calendering the fabric pre-joined permanently to the first silicone film and the second silicone firm between the cylinders of the inner pair of cylinders (2,3) of the calender at a relatively low lamination load, for disposing the second silicone film over the fabric pre-joined to the first silicone film, with negligible tensioning of the fabric; coupling the second silicone film by laminating the composite ribbon at a load and temperature sufficient to determine a permanent joining of the second silicone film to the fabric previously joined permanently to the first silicone film, between cylinders (18,19) of an auxiliary coupling station (17) associated to the calender, establishing weld spots between the silicone of the two silicone films through the openings of the fabric.

A unit for controlling the gap between calender rolls includes an adjusting screw (10) for varying the gap between the calender rolls (16) upon rotation of the screw. A fine-adjustment means is mounted between this screw and the bearing box of the calender rolls so that the gap between the rolls can be adjusted in small increments without the necessity of rotating the screw. The fine-adjusting means includes a hydraulic cylinder (22) connected to the screw, and a piston (24) movable within the cylinder and having an end portion connected to a bearing box of the calender rolls. The position of the piston (24) is adjusted hydraulically for providing fine-adjustments of the gap between the calender rolls.

A device for enabling and disabling of needle-carrier rods and piercer-carrier rods according to a presettable program is described, in particular for a shuttle embroidery machine. The device includes disengageable means for coupling said needle-carrier rods and said piercer-carrier rods to a single drive bar for reciprocating motion, each of said means being actuated by two rod assemblies, movable against the bias of resilient means, each of said rods of each of said assemblies extending rearwardly and laterally of said needle-carrier rods and of said piercer-carrier rods and being provided, at the lower end thereof, with substantially radially protruding portions, the protruding portions of the rods associated with the needle-carrier rods being offset relative to the protruding portions of the rods associated with the piercer-carrier rods, there being further provided means for simultaneous disabling of all the needle-carrier rods cooperating with the projecting parts of the rods associated therewith, and means for simultaneous disabling of all the piercer-carrier rods cooperating with the projecting parts of the rods associated therewith, as well as disengageable means for temporarily locking in the inactive condition the rods associated with the needle-carrier rods and the rods associated with the piercer-carrier rods, said locking means separately cooperating with each of said protruding portions of the rods associated with the needle-carrier rods and of the rods associated with the piercer-carrier rods.
