Though there are a large number of types of communication protocol, it is unnecessary to take into consideration the type of communication protocol governing control units (2) and data processor (7), and the man-hours taken to write a software is reduced.

A programmable display (1) creates a screen (user screen) for displaying on it the statuses of the input/output devices (4, ...) on a drawing window by using a drawing editor (32b). For example, if a symbol shown in a ladder diagram on a ladder window adjacent to the drawing window is dragged to the drawing window and dropped there, attribute data including the name and address of the input/output device (4) relating to the symbol is copied from a ladder file (33a) where a user program is registered to a screen file (33b) where the user screen is registered, and a mark corresponding to the attribute data is displayed on the drawing screen. Therefore this dispenses with a common database for registering attribute data therein.

An applet that a compiler (76) produces by compiling the screen data is transmitted to a client device (9) through the Internet (32) by an open server (77) of the control host computer (7). The client device (9) executes the applet, sends the open server (77) an inquiry and control instructions similar to those from the programmable display device (5), and updates a display according to a response. A control system is realized for remotely checking the display contents of the programmable display device (5) without redrawing.
