One or more grooves (12) are carefully machined into one or both of the surfaces of said disc (2) to be symmetrically located about the central axis of the device. The critical bursting pressure of the disc (2) when the greater pressure is applied to one surface of the disc (2) being closely related to the depth of the groove (12) formed in the other surface.

A composite reverse buckling disc assembly consisting of two portions, a concav-convex dome portion (2) and a support portion (6). The support portion (6) includes an annular outer part (8) for clamping between opposed inlet and outlet support means (12, 14) of a safety pressure relief device and an inner part (10) for location in the bore through said device. The dome portion (2) is located on the support portion (6) such that, on reversal of said dome portion (2) when it is subjected to the critical pressure of the assembly, said reversing dome portion (2) engages with the inner part (10) of the support portion (6) with sufficient force to break said inner part (10) away from the clamped outer part (8), whereby the dome portion (2) is released from the assembly and full-bore discharge through the safety pressure relief device occurs.

The apparatus also includes indicator means (56,74) for indicating when the pressure in said interspace (76) reaches a first known minimum value, while said valve means. (40) includes secondary relief valve means (54) which permit flow of fluid therethrough from the interspace (76) when the pressure in said interspace (76) reaches a further known value at least equal to said first known value but less than said known maximum value, and primary relief valve means (46) which permit flow of fluid therethrough from the interspace (76) when the disc (12) of the assembly (10) bursts. Preferably the primary and secondary relief valve means (46,54) and the indicator means (56,74) are incorporated in a single valve unit (40).
