In a piston comprising a trough-shaped combustion chamber of axially symmetric design, it is proposed to provide a recess in said chamber in the floor of the piston. In view of its depth and width, this recess has an influence on the aerodynamic speed of the gases entering and leaving the combustion chamber via the edge of the trough. In this way, heat-induced cracks are avoided at the level of said edge. The widths of the recess is limited in relation to the piston floor by the fact that no tilting moment has to be introduced into the valve shafts, and the widths of the recess is thus fixed in relation to the position and size of the valve heads.
