The boom (7) of a truck-mounted crane comprises several telescopically slidable sections which are extended and collapsed by hydraulic jacks (13). Pressurized fluid is supplied to the jacks through extension and collapse transfer conduits (14, 15) bored or received inside the rods (18) of the jacks. The extension transfer conduits (14) are intercepted by valves (19) located on the heads of the jack pistons and mechanically operated by the bottoms of the cylinders of the jacks through tappets (21). The collapse transfer conduits (15) are provided with draining means comprising respective offtakes (17a) controlled by switches (24) that are mechanically operated by fingers (25) on the rods of the upstream-adjacent jacks, respectively.

A powerful, highly maneuverable, man-lifting crane has three vertically articulating sections (26,28,30) which swivel on a common turret (22) for horizontal positioning, the third or outer section (30) of the group comprising three telescoping, tubular booms (60,62,64) wherein the outermost boom (64) is constructed of a dielectric material such as fiberglass for carrying an electrically insulated man-lifting bucket (188) at its outer end. A pair of hydraulic extension and retraction cylinders for the telescoping booms of the third section are both housed internally of the section and are mechanically interconnected and hydraulically coupled in such a way that, upon extension of the third section, the fiberglass boom always extends first and, upon retraction of the third section, the fiberglass boom always retracts last. One of the booms of the third section utilizes an unusually long rod in connection with its hydraulic cylinder unit, which rod is supported against bending and twisting by a unique, sliding support coupled in a lost motion connection with the fiberglass boom. A radio transmitter (186) carried in the lifting bucket enables the workman to control all operating functions of the crane from the bucket itself without creating an electrically conductive path to ground potential through control wires and cables.

The process comprises: a sampling stage in order to generate a sample diagram for each jib element, a stage in which a manual jib element is used, which stage comprises stages of measuring a pressure exerted by a weight of a load on the main cylinder, comparing values of the sample diagram and the pressure value detected, processing a signal expressing a difference in the values, and generating a signal which is proportional to the entity of the load. The device performing the process comprises a system of memorization (11) for storing the sample diagrams, a pressure transducer (12) for detecting a pressure determined by a weight on the base of the main cylinder, a comparator circuit (13) for comparing the values and providing a proportional signal expressing the difference between the values, and a processor (13) of the signal expressing the difference between the values which provides information regarding the load being lifted.
