A preferred porous media is made of two layers of extruded strands of polymer. Preferably the head of the semisolid product dispenser is made by ultrasonically welding the head frame to the body using a combination of double shear and energy-directing ultrasonic weld joints, coupled with a positive stop.

A process for the manufacture of hermetically sealed filter units and a product made thereby. The process comprises aligning a porous filter element (12) between two housing parts (14,16) and a thermoplastic skirt (24) that overlaps the edge of at least one housing part to shield the edge (28) of the filter element (12) disposed adjacent to the skirt (24), pressing the housing parts (14,16) together and then injection molding a thermoplastic overmold band (18) around the outer portions of the housing parts (14,16) to form a hermetic seal at the edge (28) of the filter element (12).
