In a loading position of the container (32, 34), in which same is accessible by a passenger, the cover (36) can be moved from an open position, in which access to the internal space of the container (32, 34) is permitted, into a closed position, in which access to the internal space of the container (32, 34) is blocked. According to the invention, when the cover (36) is closed, the container (32, 34) can be moved into an unloading state, in which the item of luggage can be unloaded from the container (32, 34), in an automatic manner and without the passenger being able to access same. The device (26, 28) can be integrated into a counter, in particular a self-service counter (30), wherein the cover (36) is a component of the counter. The invention also relates to a method for checking in an item of luggage of a passenger, in particular in an airport, using a device (26, 28) of this type, comprising the following steps: opening the cover (36), in order to permit access to the internal space of the container (32, 34) by a passenger; receiving the item of luggage in the container (32, 34); closing the cover (36), in order to block access to the internal space of the container (32, 34); and moving the container (32, 34) into an unloading state, in which the item of luggage is unloaded from the container (32, 34), in an automatic manner and without the passenger being able to access same.

The luggage registration process, in particular the generation and output of the luggage tag and the reception of the piece of luggage from the passenger, is carried out on the basis of the transmission and reception of luggage-related messages by means of a service provider luggage system which is independent of a check-in system of the transport company.
