In the moulded part, the plastics material used for the moulding assumes a density of the same order of magnitude as that of a typical wooden steering wheel. A dark-coloured ink is applied to the surface of the moulded part and penetrates the indentations to give them the wood-grain appearance, the ink subsequently being removed from the rest of the surface of the part and the part then undergoing a final varnishing step.

In a first step, a polyurethane foam body (6) is moulded around a metal core (5), the body corresponding in shape to the final shape desired but being thinner than the final thickness desired. In a second step, a covering (12) of plastics material is moulded on the polyurethane foam body (6) so as to bring the part to the final thickness desired. The foam used in the first step is produced without the use of chlorofluorocarbons as expanding agents.

A coupling between the hub (6) of a motor-vehicle steering wheel and the steering column (2) includes: a steering column (2) with a splined end portion (2a), a steering-wheel hub (6) with splines (7) on its internal surface, and a bush (14) between the hub (6) and the steering column (2) with splines (3a, 7a) on its internal and external surfaces for cooperating with the splines (3) on the end portion (2a) of the steering column (2) and the splines (7) on the hub (6) respectively. The external and internal surfaces of the bush (14) have different numbers of axial splines (7a, 3a) so that the coupling enables fine angular adjustment between the hub (6) and the steering column (2). A difference of from 1 to 6 between the number of internal (3a) and external (7a) splines on the bush (14) achieves a good compromise between accuracy and speed of adjustment. The device has the advantage that it can be produced very cheaply.
