A latch (20) extends from the housing to releasably latch the door to which the exit bar is mounted. A link system (32, 32b, 34, 36, 38, 40-42, 44, 46, 48, 50-52, 54, 56 and 58) links the push pad to the latch so that a push force exerted on the push pad releases the latch. An electromagnetic lock disposed in the housing locks the link system to prevent releasing of the latch. The electromagnetic lock employs an electromagnet (64) and a movable armature (70) to lock the link system. The exit bar further delays unlocking the link system for a preestablished delay time after the push pad has been pushed.

A pair of springs (84) which engage opposite end portions of the mounting plate (22) bias the mounting plate and electromagnet (28) away from the armature (122). When the electromagnet (28) is energized and is attracted to the armature (122), the mounting plate (22) slides longitudinally along a guide member (74) against the force of the springs (84) and the electromagnet (28) is displaced to close the gap (18).
