The apparatus (1) has a timepiece (9) which is pivotable relative to a backing (13). The backing (13) has a removable door (31) on its underside which is removed for placement of the message (37) into the backing (13). The user can then lift open the timepiece (9) to reveal the message (37) in the hidden compartment (17).
