The invention relates to a drainage pipe with perforations for draining whey from a whey/curd mass, in which the perforations are formed by small holes, and the hole size lies within the range 0.05 - 3 mm, while the hole density lies within the range 5 - 50,000 holes/cm². Such a pipe is used in the preparation of cheese. In a drainage pipe which is provided with a large number of small holes, a larger part of the surface can be perforated, with the result that the drainage is more efficient. A natural counterpressure can be built up by varying the hole size and the hole density over the surface of the pipe, thus making expensive facilities for regulating the counterpressure unnecessary. The hole size and/or hole density can be varied in such a way over the surface of the pipe that the open surface increases from top to bottom. Various grid patterns are described for this. If the pipe is made of plastic, the full circumference of the pipe can be provided with holes, with the result that the full surface of the pipe is available for drainage. The invention also relates to a device which is provided with at least one drainage pipe of the type according to the invention and to methods for manufacturing such a drainage pipe.

The invention relates to a sealing element for forming a liquid-tight seal between two tubular elements (1,11) running essentially parallel. The sealing element consists of positioning means which are in the form of a flange (2) which is fixed to the inner element of the tubular elements and which is provided on its periphery with a groove (4) which accommodates, in a slightly wedged fit, an endless element (3) of flexible material sealing the groove. On the inside of the groove one or more supply apertures for a compressed medium are present. When the compressed medium is supplied, the endless element of flexible material is moved outwards against the outer element of the tubular elements, in order to form a liquid-tight seal between the two columns. The element can be manufactured simply and cheaply from commercially available materials. The element is also easy to remove from the positioning means and replace. If water is used as the compressed medium, in the event of leakages, no damage is caused to the products. The sealing element according to the invention can be used in a curd drainage apparatus for removing whey in cheesemaking. The invention also relates to a device for removing whey from a whey/curd mass, provided with at least one sealing element according to the invention.

In the cyclic preparation of a length of curds by draining a mixture of whey and curds in an upright column, formed by a permeable casing (2), the preparation cycle consists of at least three parts: a thickening phase and an extrusion phase from the column and a lateral discharge phase of the length of curds. The mixture is supplied to one end of the casing (2) and a length of the thickened mass of curds is removed periodically at the other end of the casing (2). The whey/curds column inside the casing (2) is moved forwards at slow speed in the longitudinal direction of the casing (2) during the thickening phase of the preparation cycle, the thickening phase and the extrusion phase taking place at the same time. The discharge phase of the cycle takes place when the column is stationary, within a time span which is less than 20% of the thickening phase and extrusion phase.
