A method of manufacturing a superconducting thin film material includes the step of forming an intermediate layer (2), the step of forming one superconducting layer (3) to be in contact with the intermediate layer (2) and the step of forming another superconducting layer (4) by a vapor phase method to be in contact with the one superconducting layer (3). Between the step of forming the intermediate layer (2) and the step of forming the one superconducting layer (3), the intermediate layer (2) is kept in a reduced water vapor ambient or reduced carbon dioxide ambient or, between the step of forming one superconducting layer (3) and the step of forming another superconducting layer (4), the one superconducting layer (3) is kept in a reduced water vapor ambient or reduced carbon dioxide ambient. This invention provides a heat treatment apparatus for an oxide superconducting wire that is easy to control atmosphere during baking and can realize a high manufacturing speed. A heat treatment apparatus (1) comprises a heat treating furnace (4) and a cylindrical rotator (5), rotatable about a horizontal rotating axis, provided within the heat treating furnace (4). The rotator (5) in its cylindrical body (5a) have a number of through-holes (5b) formed evenly over the whole surface of the cylindrical body (5a). One end of the cylindrical body (5a) is hermetically sealed by a lid. On the other end, a gas discharge pipe (7) for discharging gas within the cylindrical body to the outside of the heat treating furnace (4) is connected to the lid. A plurality of gas supply pipes (8) are symmetrically provided separately from each other on the outer surface of the cylindrical body (5a). A number of gas jet holes are formed in each of the gas supply pipe (8) so as to jet atmosphere gas toward the surface of the cylindrical body. A tape-shaped wire (6) formed of a precursor film of a YBCO superconducting layer is wound around the rotator (5) for heat treatment for superconductor formation.

The present invention relates to a method of preparing an oxide superconducting film, the method includes reacting a metal acetate containing metal M selected from the group consisting of lanthanum, neodymium and samarium with fluorocarboxylic acid having not less than three carbon atoms, reacting barium acetate with fluorocarboxylic acid having two carbon atoms, reacting copper acetate with fluorocarboxylic acid having not less than two carbon atoms, respectively, followed by refining reaction products, dissolving the reaction products in methanol such that a molar ratio of the metal M, barium and copper is 1 : 2 : 3 to prepare a coating solution, and coating a substrate with the coating solution to form a gel film, followed by calcining and firing the gel film to prepare an oxide superconducting film.

An Hg or Nd-based oxide superconductor of the type comprises Ba as a constituent element and has a content of carbon as an impurity at a level of not greater than 2.0 atomic % whereby the oxide superconductor stably shows high superconducting characteristics without causing degradation with time. For the production, BaO, which has a reduced content of impurity carbon of 0.5% or below, is provided as a feed stock for Ba, and starting materials are mixed and processed in a dry atmosphere wherein an amount of a carbon-containing gas is suppressed to a certain level, thereby obtaining the oxide superconductor.
