The invention relates to a method for producing nanoscale titanium dioxide particles which are coated with an oxide, a hydroxide or an oxide hydroxide of Al, Ce, Zr and/or Si. According to said method, the enzymatic precipitant system urease/urea is used. Said coated titanium dioxide particles can have an average size of less than 50 nm, the coating providing effective protection against photocatalytic reactions. The coated particles are especially suitable as UV absorbers in a transparent organic matrix.

Nanoscale corundum powders are obtained by first producing an Al2O3 precursor by adding seed crystals to an aqueous solution of an aluminium compound and adding a base and then converting the Al2O3 precursor into corundum by calcination at a high temperature. Before the calcination, the salts that are present in addition to the Al2O3 precursor are separated off. The resulting product is calcinated at temperatures of 700 to 975 °C and any fines that may be present are removed. The resulting corundum powders can be sintered at temperatures ≤ 1200 °C to produce compacts or components of multiple layer systems.

The invention relates to coated, electrically polarisable, non-magnetic particles, comprising electroconductive core particles which have an electrically insulating coating that is applied according to a spray drying method. Said coating consists of a composition that is produced from inorganic glass-forming or ceramic-forming components or organically modified inorganic components according to the sol-gel method. The proportion of particles without core particles obtained after the spray drying process is less than 5 vol. %. The coated particles are suitable for producing electrorheological liquids and composite materials and coatings with anisotropic properties.
