A double sheet detection method and apparatus for a sheet-fed rotary press is proposed wherein a theoretical reference value (L) is set as a difference between an intermediate value (M) between a first theoretical amount of light transmitted through one sheet (Line A) and a second theoretical amount of light transmitted through two sheets (Line B) and the first theoretical amount of light (Line A); the theoretical reference value is stored in correspondence with the amount of light transmitted through a sheet; a difference is calculated between an amount of light transmitted through an nth sheet and an amount of light transmitted through an (n+1 )th sheet when actual printing is performed; the theoretical reference value which corresponds to the amount of light transmitted through the nth sheet and which is defined as an actual reference value is read out; the difference calculated when actual printing is performed is compared with the actual reference value; and double sheet detection is performed in accordance with a comparison result.

In a method and system of measuring an image area, a solid portion (16) corresponding to a portion having a 100% dot ratio in offset printing is formed in a margin (14) of a printing plate (3), and a blank portion (17) corresponding to a portion having a 0% dot ratio in offset printing is also formed in the margin (14) of the printing plate (3). Electrical signals obtained from the solid and blank portions (16, 17) are used as reference values for 100% and 0% dot ratios, respectively. Electrical signals obtained from an image bearing portion (15) of the printing plate (3) are converted to image area percentage data in accordance with these reference values irrespective of a nonuniform surface density of the printing plate (3).

A sheet (25) is pressed by type characters (65) on a numbering device (64) to form a raised portion (66) on the sheet (25) in a character pattern (65) indicative of a serial number. Simultaneously with printing of an image pattern on the sheet (25), ink is applied to the raised portion (66) on the sheet (25) to visualize the serial number. With no inking device required for the numbering device (64), the apparatus (21) is simple in overall arrangement and can be constructed less costly.
