A method and apparatus for installing a pile or load-bearing element into soft ground, wherein a non-percussive force, rather than a percussive force such as that applied by a hammer or a jack, is applied to the top of a hole-forming tool or pile (1) so as to push the hole-forming tool or pile (1) in a substantially continuous motion to a first depth into the ground, and wherein the hole-forming tool or pile (1) is then pushed in a non-percussive manner to a second depth while being simultaneously rotated. There is also disclosed a method and apparatus for forming a cast-in-situ pile in soft ground by pushing a hole-forming tool (1) provided with fins (3) at its base into the ground. Once the required level has been reached, the hole-forming tool (1) is rotated and concrete or grout is pumped through the body of the hole-forming tool so as concomitantly to help displace and replace the soil swept away by the fins (3). The hole-forming tool (1) is then withdrawn, and further concrete or grout is supplied so as to form a predictably-shaped pile with enhanced bearing capacity.

The retaining channel (10) of the first member (5) is shaped so as to slidably retain the keying projection (17) of the second member (12), and either the retaining channel (10) or the keying projection (17) is provided along its length with a hydrophilic material (18) which serves to seal the joint between the first and second members (5, 12). The first member (5) is installed when casting the first (22) of the adjacent panels (22, 24) of the diaphragm wall, whereas the second member (12) is installed when casting the second (24) of the adjacent panels (22, 24). In this way, a pile having a circumferential helical concrete or grout projection is formed without undue disturbance to the surrounding soil during penetration, thereby enhancing the end bearing capacity and skin friction of the resulting pile.

There is disclosed a method and apparatus for testing the static load-bearing capacity of a pile, wherein a test load is applied to the top of the pile (2) by way of a jack (1) braced against a reaction member (3) and the magnitude of the test load and the resulting displacement of the pile are measured and communicated to an electronic computer (7). The electronic computer (7) issues control signals to the jack (1) in response to the measured magnitude of the test load so as to apply a predetermined regime of test loads to the top of the pile (2). By automatically monitoring the applied test load, it is possible to maintain a desired load with a high level of accuracy for an extended period of time without the need for operator intervention.
