A vertical format corrugator or the like tube producing apparatus has two sets of independent mold sections (16) that circulate on respective paths. The mold sections (16) co-operatte to define a travelling mold cavity (18) into which a thermoplastic tube may be extruded to be molded. Fixed tracks extend along the forward and return runs of the mold section paths and are engaged by track followers on the mold sections (16). The track followers support and guide the mold section, thus enabling the elimination of chains linking the mold sections (16). In preferred embodiments, transfer mechanisms are provided at the ends of the runs to transfer the mold sections individually from one run to the next. The mold sections (16) may include removable mold blocks, means for automatically changing the configuration of the mold cavity (18) and a system for internal cooling of the mold sections (16).

The invention provides a die assembly comprising a nozzle (11) and at least one mandrel (24) which defines with the nozzle an annular die orifice. The nozzle has a longitudinally extending stem (18) terminating in the sleeve (25), the mandrel (24) being located coaxially within the sleeve (25) and coupled to the stem (18) of the nozzle (11) by an axially extending screw threaded coupling. The mandrel includes an internal flow passage (36) having an inlet positioned to receive thermoplastic material from a supply passage (36) extending along the nozzle (11) and an outlet (37) positioned to deliver the material to an annular distribution chamber (27) defined by the opposing surfaces of the mandrel (24) and the sleeve (25). The distribution chamber (27) provides an uninterrupted annular flow path extending from the outlet (37) to the die orifice, thereby avoiding the disadvantage of imperfect material distribution. For the production of multiple-walled tubing, a plurality of die stages coupled together in coaxial relationships are provided, the die components being so coupled by axially extending screw threaded couplings so positioned as not to interfere with the flow of plastic materials.

The shutter (36) is reciprocated between first and second limit positions (42,58), the expansible wall (37) thereof being alternately expanded and collapsed in response to the arrival of the shuttle at its limit positions (42,48). By this means, a more effective joint between the inner (27) and outer (26) walls of the tubing (26,27) is achieved.
