    摘要: A system for separating ferrous and non-ferrous metals and non-metals has a first electronically activated electromagnetic phase lock loop separator and a second electromagnetic eddy current separator in a single enclosure. Anti-bounce curtains are incorporated into both separators to prevent missed detections from items which have bounced out of detection range. The phase lock loop separator has a two stage stepped slide to improve accuracy and employs detector coils in a staggered relationship on opposite sides of the slide to reduce crosstalk. The eddy current electromagnetic separator has a magnet coil formed by twisting individual strands of insulated wire to form a wire rope which is inserted into cooling passages having a low electrical conductivity cooling medium. A metal detector coil used to activate the magnet when metal is detected has an improved "figure eight" geometry which results in a near zero magnetic field in the interior portion of the coil. This allows the coil to be located directly over the strongest field region of the magnet, thus reducing timing errors in firing the magnet.

    摘要: Solid waste is sorted by passing it through a rotating hollow drum (2) which has sets of extensions, called flights, from the interior wall of the drum, some sets of flights being separated from each other and from the entrance to the drum by blank sections (16) along the drum wall. The first set of flights are rotatable knives (6), positioned in a reverse spiral, so that larger items, usually filled plastic waste bags, are inhibited from advancing until opened and emptied. The second set of flights are adjustable magnet strips (52), lifting and depositing metal material onto a conveyor belt (20). The third set of flights are flexible lifters (62) for lifting and depositing glass, grit and dirt onto the takeout belt (12), which rub against the conveyor, thus cleaning both the lifters and the conveyor. A bar screen (66) is positioned over the conveyor (12) to screen out larger materials, clean the lifters, and to be cleaned by the lifters. There is also a movable conveyor belt which relieves jamming by moving away from the drum wall. The invention further comprises a method of sorting solid waste comprising providing a rotary materials separator according to the invention, placing a stream of materials into the drum, and passing the stream through the drum.

    摘要: An automated interrupt driven system which employs a circular buffer is used to sort materials based on differing electromagnetic radiation absorption and penetration characteristics. The system has a conveyor and a source of electromagnetic radiation which radiates materials travelling along the conveyor. A controller samples detector outputs at various times to evaluate the absorption and penetration characteristics of the materials to be sorted, based on a plurality of samples. Portions of the materials are ignored to obtain accurate readings from the detectors. Based on the detected penetration and absorption characteristics, the controller activates ejection mechanisms causing materials of different compositions to be deposited into different bins. The controller executes interrupts to cause detection, ejection, testing, and system history maintenance at required times. The circular buffer contains indices which point to various locations which are programmed in memory to trigger and perform specific events. The location of the indices in the circular buffer is used to control event timing, such as activating and deactivating the ejection mechanisms. This configuration allows several events to be executed simultaneously by moving to the next location in the circular buffer while the event indicated by the index in the previous location continues in progress.
