摘要： A system and method is provided for reducing the time a user needs to wait for information requested from a remote server (538) on a communications network, for example, a Web server (182) on the Internet. In an exemplary embodiment the system is user centric and the goal is to keep all data the user needs as close to the user as practical. The user's characteristics and usage patterns are used to determine what to cache and for how long, what to pre-fetch, what to refresh, and what to retrieve. In addition, by segmenting information and utilizing parallel communication channels, data transfer across the last mile can be significantly increased.

The method and apparatus use a constrained and orthogonalized, frequency domain, block, least mean square adaptive filter (5) to generate an estimate of an acoustic echo signal. The estimate of the acoustic echo signal is subtracted from a near-end microphone signal to provide an echo reduced communication signal. The echo reduced communication signal is then either transmitted or processed further. The further processing can include non-linear processing using an adaptive speech filter (18). The method and apparatus include a novel method for updating the coefficients of an adaptive filter (5).
