A method of and system for monitoring a patient's EEG (electroencephalogram) during TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) are disclosed. The system comprises a TMS device to generate, when in an active state, a plurality of magnetic pulses, which can be applied either as a burst, comprising a plurality of pulses grouped together, or as individual pulses, to the patient's head, in accordance with a TMS treatment protocol. An EEG system is provided to measure EEG data resulting from the TMS treatment protocol being applied to the patient. The system further comprises control means in communication with the TMD device and the EEG system, the control means being arranged to activate the EEG system during the time periods when the TMS device is not generating pulses, such that the EEG data measurement is continuously applied or interleaved with the magnetic pulses being generated in accordance with the TMS treatment protocol, so as to monitor treatment efficacy and detect potential seizures.

The present invention relates to a stimulator head of a magnetic stimulator used in the stimulation of living tissue such as the human brain. Such a stimulator head comprises a stimulator head body (3) suited for mounting the stimulator head on the magnetic stimulator equipment, at least one coil (1) which is connected to said stimulator head body (3) and is designed suitable for generating a stimulating magnetic field, and conductors (7) for passing electric current from said magnetic stimulator into any of said at least one coil (1). According to the invention, the stimulator head includes a housing (2) which is connected to said stimulator head body (3) and is designed to enclose at least one air-tight space (5) which further separates each of said at least one stimulator coil (1) from the other parts of said housing (2) facing the object being stimulated. Further according to the invention, each of said at least one coil (1) is placed in said housing (2), whereby an acoustic insulation can be attained between each of said at least one coil (1) and the object being stimulated by virtue of bringing the pressure in said air-tight space (5) to a substantially low level.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for targeting electromagnetic stimulation on the human brain. According to the method, pulse-like electromagnetic fields are formed, which have a strong local electromagnetic maximum, the electromagnetic maximum of the field is targeted on the brain (2), the distribution, direction, and strength of the electromagnetic field arising in the brain are defined, and some physiological or biological response, such as, for example, a muscular response measured using electromyography, is measured. According to the invention, the position of the brain is defined in three-dimensional space and the position data is received in electrical form in a data-processing apparatus (8), the position data of the electromagnetic fields are received in the data-processing apparatus (8) in the same three-dimensional set of co-ordinates as the brain, the position data of the electromagnetic fields are combined with the position data of the brain (2), and a graphical presentation (9) of the position data of the electromagnetic fields and of the position data of the brain is formed with the aid of the data-processing apparatus (8).
