A powder spray apparatus for coating threaded fasteners (35) is capable of operating at an optimal spray condition. Air supply tubes (42) and powder supply tubes (45) communicate with an air/powder entainment block (40). The jet diameter of the air supply tube (42) is sized to provide an optimum spray condition at which a constant supply of powder is provided through spray tube (45) at an optimum powder density and velocity, and hence maximizes the powder build rate on the threads of fasteners. The resulting coated fasteners exhibit a low torque scatter and a highly uniform patch. A method for operating the powder spray apparatus at the optimum spray condition is disclosed.

The present invention is directed to an improved method and apparatus for the application of powdered resins to threaded fasteners (24). In accordance with the present invention, the powdered resin handling system (10) used to apply, collect, recycle and make-up the resin is generally enclosed; that is, with the exception of the application of the resin to the fasteners (24), the resin is generally maintained within conduit, housings or hoppers that are not open to the surroundings. This tends to minimize discharge of resin into the areas surrounding the fastener (24) processing equipment and also isolates the resin from external environmental conditions that tend to degrade the resin over time. In addition, the present invention introduces fresh, new or make-up resin in a manner that assures intimate and thorough intermixing of the new and recycled resin while minimizing the cost and complexity of the equipment employed for that purpose.

The present invention is directed to a process for the application of fluoropolymer to a preselected area of a threaded fastener, and particularly to substantially all of the threads of the fastener. The fluoropolymer is supplied to a spray nozzle in powder form and is subjected to a triboelectrostatic charging process so that individual particles discharged from the spray nozzle are electrically charged. In the preferred form of the invention, the fluoropolymer powder is triboelectrically charged, entrained in an air stream discharged from the nozzle and directed onto the preselected area of the fastener. In this manner a generally uniform powder coating is deposited onto the preselected area of the fastener while the fastener is maintained at room temperature. Thereafter, the fastener is heated to a temperature above the melting point of the fluoropolymer to thereby coalesce the deposited powder into a continuous film coating which adheres, upon cooling, to the pre-selected area of the fastener. In accordance with a preferred embodiment, the fastener is heated in a manner which raises the temperature of only the preselected area of the fastener to the fluoropolymer melting point. This preferred heating technique minimizes the retention of fluoropolymer inadvertently deposited on areas of the fastener other than the preselected area, and allows this undesired fluoropolymer to be easily removed, even after heating.
