摘要: A cylindrical engraving system selectively able to engrave either in a helical or circumferential format. An encoder scans index markings on the surface of a cylinder being engraved and generates timing pulses for selective application to one or the other of a helical drive unit or a circumferential drive unit incorporated within the system controller, Engraving is performed by an engraving head which is stepped in the axial direction along the workpiece in response to step pulses generated by the selected drive unit. The step pulses may be generated in spaced bursts or at a regular frequency depending upon whether circumferential or helical driving has been selected.

摘要: An automatic self-centering chuck system for use on an engraver. The chuck system includes a plurality of jaws which are slidably mounted for movement in a radial direction toward a central aperture of the chuck to clamp a shaft for an engraving cylinder. Each of the jaws (102) is actuated for movement by a lever (132) pivotally mounted within the chuck. The levers (132) are actuated for pivotal movement by an axially reciprocating drawbar (64) which is energized for movement by a series of pneumatic cylinders. The components of the chuck are accurately machined to provide close tolerance, precise movements of the jaws (102) whereby a cylinder (24) will be accurately positioned at the central rotational axis of the chuck. In order to ensure that the precise level of jaw movement is maintained throughout the life of the chuck, a lubricant flushing or purging system is provided for flushing normal wear particles from the precision components internal to the chuck.

摘要: This invention relates to a method and apparatus for linearizing engraving cells (11) to be engraved in order to adjust for visual discontinuities. An engraver (20) for engraving a cylinder (24) comprises a controller (26) having data stored therein. The data generally corresponds to at least one line of cells to be engraved on the cylinder (24). The engraver (20) also comprises an engraving head (22) coupled to the controller (26) and operatively mounted in the engraver (20). The engraver (20) further comprises means located in the controller (26) for using filter criteria to selectively filter and linearize the data so that the controller (26) can subsequently energize the engraving head (22) to engrave the at least one line of cells so that it appears continuous. A method for engraving the cells comprises the steps of examining present pixel data associated with a line of cells to be engraved; determining whether the present pixel data should be linearized; and selectively linearizing the present pixel data if it is determined that the present pixel data should be linearized.

摘要: An engraving head apparatus and method for engraving a gravure cylinder. The engraving head apparatus including a magnetostrictive actuator formed from TERFENOL-D™ which elongatably drives a diamond-tipped stylus arm in a reciprocal manner in response to a varying magnetic field created by a bias coil and a drive coil. The bias coil establishes a DC biasing magnetic field which causes an initial expansion of the actuator to approximately one-half the total linear expansion limit of the actuator. The drive coil is concentrically interposed between the actuator and the bias coil and modulates the magnetic field intensity established by the bias coil to cause additional expansion and contraction of the actuator about the initial expansion point.

The ink volume determination comprises the steps of generating a composite cylinder layout of at least one image for the engraved cylinder (25), generating a set of data corresponding to the composite cylinder layout (28) and then using the set of data to determine the volume of ink (29-34). The printer is then filled with a volume of ink related to this calculated ink volume during a printing process (39). The method of determining ink volume may be used independently of the printing process, for example, in order to control or manage the amount of ink used in the printing press.

The method and apparatus permit the engraver (10) to accommodate cylinders (14) of differing geometries, including a range of lengths, diameters and mounting configurations. The engraver (10) comprises a headstock (16) and a tailstock (18) which cooperate to rotatably support a cylinder (14) at an engraving station (15) in the engraver (10). The engraver (10) also comprises a cylinder handling system having at least one cylinder support (30) for supporting the cylinder (14) between the headstock (16) and tailstock (18) during loading and unloading of the cylinder (14). The cylinder handling system comprises a driver (32) for driving the cylinder support (30) towards and away from the engraving station until the headstock (16) and tailstock (18) engage and rotatably support the cylinder (14). Once the cylinder (14) is rotatably supported between the headstock (16) and tailstock (18), then the cylinder support (30) is retracted. Each cylinder support (30) comprises a telescoping support member (34) having a support nest (36) for engaging and supporting the cylinder (14) at the engraving station (15).
