    摘要: A plurality of spaced ultrasonic piezoelectric transducers (A to H), may be so fixed by means of a bandage (10) or the like to and around an afflicted area of a patient as to enable their sequential or interlaced excitation, whereby the afflicted area of the patient can be excited from different aspects, so that ultrasonic energy is not permitted to enter the body from any single point on a continuous-wave basis. Each transducer (A to H) delivers its ultrasonic energy via a body of material (14) having a wave impedance that substantially matches the wave impedance of human soft tissue, thereby avoiding or minimising the annoyance of a mismatched entry into the patient's body. The net result is for the patient to derive the therapeutic benefits of a moving applicator, without any physical displacement of one with respect to any other of the plural spaced transducers.

    摘要: A bone resector tool (100) comprises an ultrasonic transducer (8), typically generating longitudinal mode vibrations at around 40 kHz, and having an elongate blade portion (2) mounted thereto. The transducer (8) and blade portion (2) are mounted to a rotatably-drivable converter element (3). Rotation of the converter element (3) produces reciprocal longitudinal motion of the transducer (8) and blade portion (2). A counterweight (5B) is also mounted to the converter element (3), moving out of phase with the transducer (8) and blade portion (2), such that a centre of mass of the whole system is stationary, reducing vibration of the tool (100) in a user's hand. The peak velocity due to the ultrasonic vibrations of a distal tip (6A) of the blade portion (2) is up to seven times greater than its peak velocity due to the reciprocal longitudinal motion. This permits rapid, low-effort cutting of bone with easy removal of cut debris and minimal consequent necrosis.

All forms of the tool (1, 21, 31) are particularly suitable for cutting cancellous bone around an implant to be removed during revision of a joint arthroplasty.

    摘要: An osteotome suitable for cutting through cancellous bone that is holding an orthopaedic implant requiring revision within a cavity of a bone, includes a cylindrical waveguide connectable to a source of ultrasonic vibrations at its proximal end and a blade having a hollow part-cylindrical cross-section and a cutting edge at its distal tip. The respective longitudinal axes of the waveguide and the blade cross at an angle of about 30°, and the waveguide and blade taper and curve smoothly together where they meet. The osteotome is dimensioned such that a first antinode of the ultrasonic vibrations is located at a proximal end of the waveguide, a second antinode is located at the distal tip of the blade and a node is located where the waveguide and blade meet. The osteotome cuts readily through cancellous bone when ultrasonically energized.
