L'image est numérisée puis les particules sont classifiées par leur couleur et leur forme, en les comparant à des seuils de référence appropriés au niveau d'un système de processeur central (14). Le nombre de particules dans chaque catégorie peut être affiché sur un écran approprié (16) pour fournir au personnel d'exploitation une indication de la proportion des particules de carbone présentes dans les cendres.

The intermediate support (62) is itself mounted on the fixed support (64) by second mounting means (63) for oscillatory movement of the intermediate support (62) relative to the fixed support (64) only in a second substantially linear direction in a vertical plane and orthogonal to said first direction. The oscillatory movements are applied to the table at a common frequency by vibrating means (65, 66). The relative phase of the oscillatory movements can be changed by control means to reverse the direction of transport of particulate material on the delivery table (60).

A carbon-in-ash monitor uses a fluidised bed furnace (26) to burn any carbon in sampled boiler flue ash and evolve carbon dioxide therefrom. Fluidising gas (air) is provided to the bed a measured flow rate and a batching arrangement (14) feeds successive batches of ash of measured mass to the furnace (26) at a measured frequency. A CO₂ monitor (122) measures the amount of CO₂ evolved to determine the carbon content of the ash. Batches are provided using a vibratory table (15) to transport ash from a point of supply (16) to the table and a point of delivery (17) of ash in a stream from the table. The vibratory table (15) is horizontal and is driven so that the mode of vibration can be selected to reverse the direction of ash transport.
