A digital interface between analogue RF hardware and digital processing hardware which (a) defines how the analogue RF hardware and digital processing hardware send and receive digital data to one another and (b) is open in order to decouple the design of the analogue RF hardware from the design of the digital processing hardware. The adoption of such an interface will facilitate the uptake of software defined radio (SDR), both as a design-time and run-time technology, as it enables the production of analogue/RF components independently from the digital domain hardware and software.

An MPEG 1 layer II encoder can be programmed to add a data payload to a frame. It uses a conventional Musicam pyshoacoustic model to apply a sub-band resolution parameter that is constant across a window of a given number of samples. The encoder is further programmed to apply a sub-band resolution algorithm that generates a more accurate set of resolution parameters that vary across at least part of a given window, the difference between the constant parameter and the variable resolution parameters for the same window being indicative of bits which can be overwritten with the data payload.

Music tracks are received over wireless digital radio and stored in encrypted form in a digital media player, but only when the player is receiving and playing back advertisements is it possibly to playback stored, encrypted tracks. A user could therefore build up a large library of music tracks over time, stored on the player, knowing that he could listen to any so long as he was prepared also to listen to advertisements. No payment is needed to initially receive and store the tracks; instead, distributors of the content and the content owners can be paid out of the advertising revenue. Further decryption of stored media content, beyond the limited amount decrypted once a decryption key associated with a given advertisement has been received and processed, is possible only so long as subsequent advertisements axe received at and played back by the player.

In a first aspect the invention provides an apparatus for processing radio signals for connection to a personal computing device (PCD), in which a stream of digitised intermediate frequency (IF) data is maintained in at least one direction. In the inbound direction, information is received (104) as radio frequency (RF) signals by the device, down-converted (105) to IF and then digitised (107) and fed into the PCD (109) under control of an interface management unit (IMU 108). Software modules in the PCD then provide whatever demodulation processing is required for the transmission scheme in use. The invention further provides a transmitter apparatus. In the outbound direction, an IF signal is digitally synthesised by software on the PCD (109), according to an appropriate modulation scheme, and the resulting signal is passed to the device via the IMU, where it is used to generate (110) a corresponding analogue waveform. This waveform is then up-converted (112) to RF at the appropriate frequency and transmitted. As the PCD software is able to send commands to the device to set the centre frequency and bandwidth of RF to be accepted and transmitted, the device (together with appropriate software on the PCD) provides the basis for a generic, low-cost radio-frequency communications system. The invention may further provide a transceiver apparatus having both inbound and outbound channels.

Emergency message transmitters are deployed in tunnels etc. to transmit emergency messages to users (e.g. motorists) equipped with radio receivers. Configuration information is derived from a normal, broadcast digital signal using a receiver situated at the tunnel mouth; this configuration information can include information defining the sub-channel structure. A pre-recorded or live audio emergency message is then processed so that, when transmitted, it will conform to the configuration information. The processed message is then transmitted within the tunnel during an emergency. Because the configuration information of the message matches that of the broadcast signal that was being processed by a user's radio receiver immediately prior to receipt of the emergency message, processing is far faster since the user's radio receiver does not have to re-configure itself.

This patent describes a method which allows multiple DAB transmission signals to be modulated, up-converted, filtered and combined prior to a High Power Amplifier (HPA), thus reducing the multiple up-conversion and HPA to a single unit and eliminating the need for a high power combiner. This significantly reduces the equipment needed for multi-channel transmissions and the consequent cost. In addition the techniques described provide signal timing alignment as required in Single Frequency Networks (SFN).
