A cooling gas system for a can bodymaker tool pack is provided. The cooling gas system uses a compressed gas to cool a punch and/or a die pack. That is, a compressed gas is delivered to at least one location adjacent the punch and die pack. A nozzle assembly directs the compressed gas toward a selected location. As the compressed gas passes through the nozzle assembly, or immediately after passing through the nozzle assembly, the compressed gas expands. As is known, an expanding gas cools as it expands. Thus, a cool gas is directed to the surface of the punch and the die pack. The cool gas absorbs heat from the punch and die pack thereby cooling the heated components.

In a can forming machine (10) a system that determines the position of a reciprocating ram (14) and allows for the domer (18) to be repositioned automatically is provided. The system includes a punch position sensor assembly (52), a control system (54), and a domer positioning assembly (56). The punch position sensor assembly (52) is positioned about the ram (14), preferably at the domer side of the last die. At this location, the punch position sensor assembly (52) can determine the position of the ram (14) as it enters the dieback during the return stroke. The control system (54) receives data from the punch position sensor assembly (52) and, if the ram (14) is not substantially, concentrically aligned with the die pack on the return stroke, sends a signal to the domer positioning assembly (56) to reposition the domer (18). This process may be repeated until the ram travels along a path substantially aligned with the die pack on the return stroke.

A sealant dispensing system is disclosed which applies sealant material onto irregularly shaped, i.e. non-circular, closure members (100). A closure member is loaded onto a rotary chuck (82) connected to the servo motor (76). The sealant applying gun (20) is moveable, so that through a combination of rotation of the member (100) and movement of the gun (20) the gun follows the outline of the member (100) of any shape. After loading member (100) onto chuck (82), chuck rotation is initiated. An electromagnet (86) may be located in proximity to each chuck (82) so that the electromagnet (86) may be activated during loading of the closure member (100) onto the chuck (82) and then deactivated during unloading of the member (100) from the chuck (82) following application of sealant.
