Prior to joining of a protective adhesive sheet to a workpiece such as an automobile, a pressurizing mechanism is operated to control pressure in accordance with positional information of an evaluation sample detected by a rotary encoder and deviation. The deviation is determined through comparison between actual pressure and reference pressure stored in the storing unit and determined for every position of the evaluation sample, the actual pressure being applied to the adhesive sheet by a squeegee at a tip end of an arm swung downward with an air cylinder. In addition, the adhesive sheet is joined to the evaluation sample while a servomotor for moving a holding table is operated to control a moving speed of the holding table in accordance with deviation. The deviation is determined through comparison between an actual moving speed and a reference moving speed stored in the storing unit, the actual moving speed being determined from the positional information. Then, the adhesive tape is repeatedly joined to the evaluation sample under the above conditions. An optimal joining condition is selected from the conditions, and the adhesive tape is joined to the workpiece under the optimal joining condition.

The adhesive application tool is provided with a support (12) for accommodating a roll (14) wound with adhesive tape (15) that is to be applied, with an application roller (28) for applying the adhesive tape (15) that is pulled off the roll (14), and with a holding device (20). Said holding device is located in front of the application roller (28) and is provided for holding the adhesive tape (15), which is pulled off the roll (14), ready between two application processes. The holding device (20) additionally serves to press adhesive tape (15), which is held ready, onto the surface to be adhered, for initiating an application process. A transfer from adhesive tape (15) pressed on by the holding device (20) is effected by the application roller (28) after the adhesive application tool is advanced.
