Abstract:
A composition suitable for making films, wherein the composition contains keratin obtained from avian feathers and at least one OH containing plasticizer. Protein-based films containing at least one protein and at least one OH containing plasticizer, wherein the protein is a protein whose PE value is >=2.5 where PE=(S+T+Y)/C where PE is plasticizer efficiency and where S, T, Y, and C are the amino acids serine, threonine, tyrosine, and cysteine, respectively, in the protein. Preferably the protein is keratin obtained from avian feathers.
Abstract:
Chromium is an essential element which has been shown to have beneficial effects on carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Often, dietary intake is suboptimal, and nutritional supplements may not be effective due to poor absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. A novel chromium-histidine complex has been prepared which significantly improves absorption capability over current available chromium nutritional supplements. The complex is safe, easily prepared and may be combined with an ingestible carrier for consumption as a tablet, capsule, aqueous solution, food or food product.
Abstract:
The immune response of an animal to a target immunogen may be enhanced by useof a novel adjuvant which includes low concentrations of killed cells of Mycobacterium avium subspecies avium in combination with mineral oil. The adjuvant may be used in vaccine compositions for the immunization of an animal against any target immunogen, and is particularly preferred for use with immunocontraceptive vaccines such as GnRH and PZP immunocontraceptive vaccines.
Abstract:
A feed for dairy cows containing 1α-hydroxylated vitamin D compounds. The vitamin D compounds cause improved utilization of dietary phosphorus and can eliminate the need for supplemental quantities of inorganic phosphorus in the cows'diet. In particular, milk production in dairy cows may be maintained in relatively high yield even though fed a low P diet.
Abstract:
Imaging systems, containing at least one charge-coupled device detector, are used for determining contamination of foodstuffs, such as for example, animal carcasses. Image processing algorithms allow for the identification of contaminants.
Abstract:
The present invention includes compositions and methods for site-specific polynucleotide replacement in eukaryotic cells. These methods include single polynucleotide replacement as well as gene stacking methods. Preferred eukaryotic cells for use in the present invention are plant cells and mammalian cells.
Abstract:
This invention provides methods for obtaining specific and stable integration of nucleic acids into eukaryotic cells. The invention makes use of site-specific recombination systems that use prokaryotic recombinase polypeptides, such as the ΖC31 integrase, that can mediate recombination between the recombination sites, but not between hybrid recombination sites that are formed upon the recombination. Thus, the recombination is irreversible in the absence of additional factors. Eukaryotic cells that contain the recombinase polypeptides, or genes that encode the recombinases, are also provided.
Abstract:
Compositions and methods employing the compositions for attracting arthropods. The compositions comprise at least one compound of formula (I) and at least one compound from group (II).
Abstract:
Termite foods mixed together in a matrix suitable to be used as baits and attractants for termites are provided. This termite matrix is preferred by termites over naturally-occurring foods such as deadwood, trees and wood used in human constructions, and other known termite matrices. It comprises cellulose, water and termite-preferred nutrients. Methods of monitoring the presence of termites using such matrices, and methods of controlling termites using such matrices to deliver termite toxins are also provided.
Abstract:
This invention provides for methods of making transgenic plants which have modified grain texture when compared to the plants from which the transgenic plants are derived. The modified grain texture is conferred onto the transgenic plants by introducing into the plant genes which confer the quantitative trait of grain softness; puroindoline A and puroindoline B.
