Abstract: The invention provides an ablation probe tip (100) having a shaft (102) with an insertion end (104). The ablation probe tip (100) receives ablation means from an ablation source and the ablation probe tip is for ablating targeted tissue from within. The shaft including a coaxial antenna (110) having an annular aperture (120) defined in at least one outer layer toward said insertion end and a center of ablation (124) located within said antenna (110) and surrounded by the annular aperture (120). An annular heat transfer layer (130) surrounds the coaxial antenna (110) and is spaced from the insertion end (104) such that said annular aperture (120) is the annular heat transfer layer (130) and the insertion end (104). The center of ablation (124) is a focal region from which said ablation means radiates through the annular aperture (120) to form an ablation zone (150, 160, 170). The ablation zone (150, 160, 170) has a predetermined shape determined by an aperture offset being a distance between the center of ablation and an annular edge of said annular heat transfer layer (130). The predetermined shape is selected from the group consisting of oblate, spherical, and oblong wherein the ablation zone is an oblate shaped ablation zone (150) and the aperture offset is less than 1 mm; or the ablation zone is a spherical shaped ablation zone (160) and the aperture offset is in a range of 1 mm to 4 mm; or the ablation zone is an oblong shaped ablation zone (170) and the aperture offset is greater than 4 mm.

Abstract: A method for volume scanning of both hard tissues (126) and gingival tissues (122) of a patient is proposed. The method includes comprising the steps of using an impression (84) of a material visible in a volume scan, generating a volume scan in which hard tissue (126) is visible and said impression (84) is visible, and gingival tissue (122) being represented as the space between the visible hard tissue (126) and the visible impression (84). The volume scan includes a surgical site (162) to receive an ablation probe tip (108). The results of the step of generating a volume scan are provided for the purpose of manufacturing a custom surgical stent (110) having at least one surgical guide (112) for guiding placement of an ablation probe tip (108). The results comprise information representing said gingival tissue (126) and said hard tissue (126).

The predetermined shape is selected from the group consisting of oblate, spherical, and oblong wherein the ablation zone is an oblate shaped ablation zone (150) and the aperture offset is less than 1 mm; or the ablation zone is a spherical shaped ablation zone (160) and the aperture offset is in a range of 1 mm to 4 mm; or the ablation zone is an oblong shaped ablation zone (170) and the aperture offset is greater than 4 mm.
