A method for counting vehicle transits in the lane (3a) of a road (2), wherein, by mean of a device (5) mounted in the vicinity of the road (2a) and having an image sensor (5), video images of the lane (3a, 3b) are captured, a virtual loop (30) positioned in the lane (3a) is defined on the images, the current local time and date for the stretch of road (2a) are acquired, the shadow direction and length (D, L) are calculated as a function of the local time and date and the geostationary coordinates of the road (2a), a prediction area (40), which is associated with the lane (3a, 3b) and is obtained as function of the shape and position of the virtual loop (30) and the shadow direction and length (D, L), is defined on the images, movements over the virtual loop (30) and over the prediction area (40) are detected and the transit of a vehicle in the lane (3a, 3b) is counted on the basis of a comparison between the times of the detected movements.
