A gas spring comprising a cylindrical body (10) having a base wall (11) and an integral side wall (12) with an open upper end defining a bore (13). The bore (13) includes a lower cylindrical portion (14) and an upper cylindrical portion (15) of greater diameter than the lower cylindrical portion defining a shoulder (16). A piston (18) of constant diameter is positioned in the bore (13) and has a radial flange (19) on its lower end with a wear bearing (20) contacting the lower portion (14) of the bore. An annular end cap (22) is threaded in the upper cylindrical portion (15) of the bore (13) and maintains the retainer (21) against the shoulder. An annular lock nut (23) is threaded in the upper portion (15) of the bore (13) and locks the end cap (22) in position. Circumferentially spaced radial openings (34) are provided adjacent to the periphery of the lock nut for venting gas during disassembly if any gas remains. A charging valve (38) and a rupture plug (43) including pressure relief disc (44) are provided in the base wall (11). In one form, the gas spring includes a plurality of longitudinal spaced annular ribs (55,56,57,60) which provide heat dissipation.

A normally closed control valve (15) is provided in the passage (20) and is operable to open the passage (20) in time relation to the operation of the machine system in order to apply the higher gaseous pressure of the gaseous intensifier cylinder (16) to the gaseous cylinder (10) and lock the gaseous cylinder and prevent it from moving until the control valve (15) is actuated to close the passage (20) thereby providing a predetermined time delay.

Each cut-off assembly comprises a cutter blade (80) that is supported for movement in an arcuate path and for radial movement. A corrugating web forming apparatus for receiving selectively a plurality of webs of flat material and slitting each of said webs to form two strips which are thereafter shaped to form corrugations and severed to form shaped portions having predetermined lengths, predetermined height and predetermined spacing between the corrugations which comprises a slitting station including at least two sets of slitting rolls adapted to be used selectively for slitting a respective web, a forming station including at least two sets of forming rolls for transversely corrugating two strips severed from a web simultaneously- a plurality of longitudinally roll pack stations comprising at least two sets of forming rolls for controlling the longitudinal spacing between the corrugations on the strips, a web control station including at least two sets of rolls for engaging and intermittently interrupting the movement of the corrugated strips, and a cutting station for cutting predetermined lengths from said corrugated strips. Provision is made for adjusting the orientation of the rolls of one packing station relative to another to adjust the pitch or distance between corrugations. Provision is also made for selectively driving one set of the forming rolls for each strip without driving the other set of forming rolls.

A high pressure condenser (20) comprising a plurality of transversely spaced flattened tubes (21) having their ends extending into headers (23) at each end to the tubes and a plurality of undulating fins (22) extending between adjacent tubes. The tubes are made by utilizing flat strip stock that is coated on both surfaces with a coating that will fuse and bond on the application of heat and has a plurality of longitudinally and transversely spaced deformed portions or projections (25). The flat strip stock is subjected to the steps of first rolling the opposite edges of the strip into a curved configuration having a radius corresponding to the radius of curvature desired on the rounded longitudinally welded edge of the tube, then progressively rolling the central portion of the strip into the rounded configuration desired along the other longitudinal edge of the tube (21) while utilizing the rounded free edge portions and the center bend to accurately center the strip as it advances through the successive forming rolls and, thereafter heating the spaced free edges of the rolled strip to a temperature at which they are adapted to be fused together and directing them through a guide located upstream from and directly adjacent a pair of squeeze rolls for effecting a weld seam therebetween, the guide being designed to engage each free edge portion of the strip on laterally opposite sides thereof. The projections (25) in the strip are brought into engagement before the free edges of the rolled strip are fused together. When the tubes (21) are assembled with the fins to the headers (23), the entire assembly is subjected to heat to cause the coating on the surfaces of the tubes to bond the projections to one another and to bond the exterior of the tubes to the slots in the headers (23) through which the ends of the tubes extend.
