An apparatus for punching and binding a stack of papers is disclosed. The apparatus includes a paper clamp and a binding element insertion device that are movable relative to each other. The binding element insertion device is configured to receive and detect binding elements of different sizes. The apparatus also includes a punching mechanism, a controller, and a user interface. The controller controls movement of the paper clamp and the binding element insertion device based on the size of the binding element needed to bind the stack of papers together. The user interface is configured to provide information to a user of the apparatus and to receive input from the user before, during, and after the punching and binding operation.

An improvement to a stamping press having a blanking punch and die combination comprising a blanking die (52) defining an opening, a cooperating blanking punch (50), dimensioned closely to mate with the opening wherein the die edge defining the opening is radiused to cause metal flow, a stock engaging shedder (74) displaceable within the die opening to engage and clamp stock (122) and a stripper (86) encircling the blanking punch (50) and displaceable therealong to remove surplus stock after a blanking operation. The improvement comprises the stripper (86) being disposed to engage and clamp stock (122) being punched by the blanking punch and die. Additionally, there is a variable pressure source (104, 108, 110, 120) connected to cause the stripper (86) to engage and clamp the stock (122) during punching of the stock under a pressure low enough to permit the stock to flow away from the blanking punch (50) and high enough to prevent the stock from bending and to cause the stripper to (86) exert sufficient force on the stock (122) following punching of the stock to strip the stock from the blanking punch (50). The preferred variable pressure source comprises a piston (104) connected between the stripper (86) and a fixed point (94) and a variable pressure source (110) operably connected to the piston. The variable pressure can be set for different types and thicknesses of material.

A dough cutting and packing apparatus for cutting a sheet of dough into dough pieces and transferring the dough pieces to containers. A cutting unit is defined by a plurality of cutting plates (14) having dough retaining openings. The sheet of dough is partially sheeted into the dough retaining openings by an initial compressor roll (13) which is spaced from an upper surface of the cutting plates. A terminal compressor roll (30) contacts the upper surface of the cutting plates, and acts to sheet a remaining portion of the dough sheet into the dough retaining openings to divide the dough sheet into a plurality of dough pieces retained in the openings. The initial compressor roll is driven at a peripheral rate of speed that exceeds an instantaneous linear rate of speed of the cutting unit. The terminal compressor roll is frictionally driven via contact with the cutting plates such that a peripheral rate of speed of the terminal compressor matches the linear rate of speed of the cutting unit. A packing mechanism transfers the dough pieces from the cutting unit to the containers as the containers are moved relative to the packing mechanism by a plurality of flighted augers.
