摘要: A method and apparatus for machining a workpiece with an insert (58) having a surface (64) terminating with a cutting edge includes a tool holder (41, 76) adapted to mount the insert, which is formed with a discharge orifice (84) lying atop the exposed surface of the insert for ejecting high velocity coolant across the insert and beneath the chips formed from the workpiece.
The discharge orifice of the tool holder is spaced within the range of about 0.04 to 0.44 inches from the cutting edge of the insert clamped therein. 摘要: A flow control apparatus for selectively directing fluid from a fluid supply line to a number of outlet lines includes an outer member having an outer wall, a throughbore forming an annular inner wall and a plurality of spaced, discharge bores formed therebetween. An inner member having an annular outer wall is received within the throughbore of the outer member so that their annular walls face one another. The outer member is rotatable with respect to the inner member to selectively align each of its discharge bores with the fluid passageway of the inner member, and an interlock mechanism is provided to ensure accurate alignment therebetween. The facing surfaces of the inner and outer members are sealed at the fluid passageway by a Teflon seal mounted at one end of a driven piston which is axially movable within the fluid passageway. A second, driver piston is operable to force the driven piston axially toward the outer member so that the Teflon seal is compressed between the facing surfaces of the inner and outer members to prevent fluid leakage at the fluid passageway and an aligning discharge bore.

摘要: A tool holder (10) which is convertible to perform a veriety of machining operations such as threading, turning and grooving comprises a support bar (12) formed with a cavity which receives a mounting block (24) having a seat (32) adapted to support an insert so that the top surface of the insert is exposed and its cutting edge extends outwardly from the seat. The insert is clamped within the seat by a clamping block (48), which is secured atop the insert by a machine screw (26). The top edge of the clamping block is formed with a beveled bearing surface (64) which engages the head of the machine screw so that forces are applied to the clamping block upon tightening of the screw which urge the insert downwardly, rearwardly and inwardly against the walls of the mounting block seat.

摘要: A method and apparatus for performing machining operations on a workpiece (12) such as cutting, boring, turning and milling is accomplished at reduced power levels with increased tool life and efficiency. The apparatus includes a tool holder formed with at least one release orifice (32) in which a cutting insert (18) is mounted having a surface (17) terminating with a cutting edge (19). The cutting edge of the insert is adapted to engage the workpiece (12) to form chips (42) which overliethe surface (17) of the cutting insert (18) and the release orifice (32) in the holder. A coolant delivery system including a pump is adaptedto eject a coolant jet (38) from the release orifice (32) at high velocity and high pressure between the surface (17) of the cutting insert (18) and the chips (42), from a location beneath the chips.
