Apparatus for surface treatment of a synthetic organic polymer moulding includes a preliminary heating chamber (11) for heating a synthetic organic polymer moulding as a preliminary step, a solvent treatment chamber (21) for contacting the surface of the preliminarily-heated moulding with an ultraviolet light absorbing solvent provided in a solvent tank (25), an irradiation chamber (31) including low pressure mercury lamps (35) for irradiating the surface of the moulding with ultraviolet light having a main wavelength of 184.9 nm, and a transfer mechanism such as a belt conveyor (41) for transferring the moulding through the chambers. The apparatus can alternatively dispense with the preliminary heating chamber, in which case the solvent treatment chamber is arranged to contact the surface of the moulding with the ultraviolet light absorbing solvent having been heated to a predetermined temperature. A polypropylene type resin is preferably used as the synthetic organic polymer. The surface of the synthetic organic polymer moulding is easily modified and hence coating, printing, adhesion, or similar treatment of the moulding can be effected with high adherence.

The production of these components is described. The components are mixed in any order and molded. The surface of the molded article, e.g. a film, plate or fibers, may be degreased and is irradiated with ultraviolet light of wavelength less than 300 nm, preferably 185 and 254 nm as main wavelengths, for 20 seconds to 10 minutes: The irradiation improves the coatability of the surface, which may then be coated with a coating of an alkyd-melamine or an acrylic urethane.
