The policing device verifies at a predetermined location of a communication system whether a cell stream transmitted over that communication system satisfies a negotiated cell interarrival time and a negotiated cell delay variation and takes adequate actions. The verification is performed according to an algorithm including the steps of comparing for each cell of the cell stream and at the predetermined location the current arrival time of the cell with a predicted arrival time and discarding the cell if that predicted arrival time is larger than the sum of the present arrival time and an additional time interval. When simultaneously the cell is discarded and the additional time interval is smaller than the negotiated cell interarrival time, the predicted arrival time is adapted and the additional time interval is increased to a value having an upper limit equal to the negotiated cell interarrival time, whereas when the predicted arrival time is smaller than or equal to the current arrival time the additional time interval is decreased to a value having a lower limit equal to the negotiated cell delay variation.

5 n7 The shaping arrangement includes a time parameter assignment unit (TAU) coupled between an input terminal (IN1/16) of an information packet switching system and a corresponding input (SIN1/16) of a switching unit (SU) of that switching system and, a filter circuit (FC) and a buffer circuit (FC) coupled in cascade between an output (SOUT1/16) of the switching unit (SU) and an output terminal (OUT1/16) of the switching system. The time assignment unit (TAU) calculates, according to a predetermined algorithm and for each information packet applied to it, the value of a time parameter as a function of the instant in time at which that information packet is applied to the input terminal of the system and inserts the calculated value in the information packet. Thereafter the information packet is switched by the switching unit (SU) to the above mentioned output (SOUT1/16) and thus to the filtering circuit (FC). The latter circuit applies the information packet to the buffer circuit (BC) or not depending on the result of the application of a filtering algorithm to that information packet. The filtering algorithm uses the value of the time parameter inserted in the information packet. The buffer circuit buffers the information packet before providing it to the output terminal during a time interval which is such that the total time interval indicated by the difference between the instant in time at which the information packet is supplied to the output terminal and the value of the time parameter included in the packet has a predetermined constant value.

The connectionless server is able to transfer messages constituted by information packets over a connection oriented switching network ATM in a connectionless way. It includes a plurality of processing modules TLK1 to TLKm, CLSP1 to CLSPn and CLPR1 to CLPRp, which perform respective predetermined actions on the information packets in a predetermined sequence and thereafter transfer these packets over the ATM network. The modules communicate with each other over a switching means MPSR which can be the ATM network. The time interval needed to perform the mentioned actions is at most equal to the minimum inter arrival time between two successive packets at the server. As a result the packet are handled on the fly.

A policing method is proposed policing an aggregate ATM cell stream (IN) consisting of both high and low priority cells. The method consists in policing the aggregated stream as a whole whilst also policing separately a substream formed by the high priority cells as prescribed by ITU-TS recommendation I.371. The present policing method always inserts a high priority cell satisfying the last mentioned separate policing step into the output stream (OUT) regardless of the result of the first mentioned aggregate policing step. In order to keep a good performance for the method, the predicted arrival time used in this aggregate policing step is however also updated for such a high priority cell which does not conform to this aggregate policing step. The latter requires a modification of the known and commonly used Virtual Scheduling Algorithm.

A bursty traffic multiplexing arrangement (A) includes a multiplexing unit (MUX) to multiplex a plurality of bursty input flows (IF1, ... , IFI, ... , IFN) into an output flow (OF). Congestion due to insufficient throughput capacity of the multiplexing unit (MUX) is avoided by incorporating an input shaping device (ISDI) for each input (MII) of the multiplexing unit (MUX). Data elements constituting such an input flow (IFI) are stored in an input buffer (IBI) which forms part of the corresponding input shaping device (ISDI), and are applied to the multiplexing unit (MUX) at a rate (BI) which does not exceed a predetermined maximum input buffer reading rate (BIMAX) associated to this input buffer (IBI). Furthermore, via feedback input flow rate control information (IFRI), the input flow rates (A1, ..., AI, ... , AN) can be controlled to thereby avoid input buffer overload.

A shaping method is proposed in which cells (U1-U7, 01-06) of a cell stream (CS1) are mutually delayed to obtain a shaped cell stream (CS2). For this a shaping delay is used which depends upon the type of the cells which are so delayed in order for consecutive user cells (U1-U2, U2-U3, ...) to be mutually delayed over the inverse (TU) of the peak cell rate negotiated for these user cells (U1-U7). The above is obtained by making this shaping delay equal to the above inverse when adjacent cells are user cells (U1-U2), to a fraction (TU/3) of this inverse when the second one of these adjacent cells is an operation and maintenance or OAM cell (01-07) and to the difference between the above inverse and the number of consecutive OAM cells inbetween two user cells (U5-U6) times the above fraction if the first one of said adjacent cells is an OAM cell (03) whilst the second one is a user cell (U6).

A policing device is proposed in which a plurality of parallel police processors (PP1, PP2) are included each of which implements a Modified Virtual Scheduling Algorithm and is so able to derive for a cell for which it is activated by an enabling circuit (EC) a conformance signals (CS1, CS2). An arbitration module (AM) generates from the latter signals, a plurality of which may be provided per cell of the input ATM stream (IN), a discard signal (DS) indicating wether or not such a cell may be inserted into an output stream (OUT) by a discard circuit (DC) as well as feedback signals (FS1, FS2) which indicate to a corresponding processor whether or not to carry out an already prepared update of a predicted arrival time used in the above mentioned algorithm. The architecture of the present policing device is very generic in that it allows implementation of any policing method by straightforwardly adapting the arbitration module and the enabling circuit.
