A method to control legacy devices located in home networks is provided and whereof a plurality of the legacy devices communicates according to a predefined legacy protocol, is provided. The method comprises the steps of - associating by a legacy proxy in a home network to a newly connected legacy device of the legacy devices an Internet Protocol address and storing a generated association in a memory; and - forwarding by the legacy proxy the associated Internet Protocol address to a legacy controller in an Internet Protocol network; and in order to support communication between the legacy controller and the legacy device : - upon reception by the legacy proxy (LP1) of a legacy protocol packet according to the legacy protocol, first transforming by first transforming means, the legacy protocol packet into an Internet Protocol packet being destined for the legacy controller, and comprising the associated Internet Protocol address being determined according to the above mentioned association; and - upon reception by the legacy proxy of an Internet protocol packet, second transforming by second transforming means, the Internet Protocol packet into a legacy protocol packet being destined for the legacy device and therefore comprising a legacy address of the legacy device.

A method to forward a packet according to predefined protocol steps in a sensor personal area network comprising data communication sensor devices and the respective sensor devices are described. The method comprises the steps of assigning a predefined compression value to a compression field in the packet for indicating that a source network identifier of the originator of the packet is assumed to be equal to a destination network identifier of an intended recipient of the packet. Furthermore, the method comprises assigning a predefined label switching value lsv to an addressing mode field DAM-F in the packet P for indicating that the above mentioned protocol steps further comprise a label switching principle that must be applied to forward the packet. Finally the method comprises using a source network identifier field SNI-F of the packet for storing and retrieving the label value lab1 for application of the label switching principle based thereon.

The invention concerns using sensorML to facilitate the installation of software for interaction with sensors, preferably within a home network with a service gateway (100). According to the invention, a management framework (130) is provided to manage a sensor controlling means, adapted to transmit management instructions to said sensor controlling means, and to receive information in sensorML format, wherein the information comprises software identification information. According to another aspect of the invention, a method is provided for retrieving software identification information pertaining to a sensor in a network, comprising accessing a sensorML document (400), and extracting software identification information from it.
